Limmud FSU Marking the 20th Anniversary of the Assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin

The prime minister's former aides make a journey to Sydorovychi, the Ukrainian village where Nehemia Rabin was born and raised

NEW YORK, NY, November 07, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Among participants was the distinguished journalist and columnist Eitan Haber, who was Rabin's head of bureau and spokesman, who delivered the dramatic announcement of the assassination on November 4, 1995. In November 2011, Limmud FSU inaugurated a memorial in the village to the slain prime minister.

The event was held in the framework of Limmud FSU Lviv conference, that takes place this weekend, November 5-8. During the three-day pluralistic, egalitarian conference, which, like all Limmud FSU events, is entirely planned and run by young local volunteers, the participants will have the choice of more than 150 lectures, presentations, discussions, master-classes, workshops and study groups on many different subjects, from Jewish history, prose and poetry, theater and dance.

A talk will be given by Eitan Haber on "The Effect of the Murder of Rabin on the Political and Social Life of Israel." Chaim Chesler, the founder of Limmud FSU says, "This, our second event in Lviv, reflects the exponential growth in our activities. The fact that this conference was oversubscribed just days after registration began, proves that our formula of education, culture, entertainment and the opportunity for dialogue and debate among the young participants, makes our events unique on the Jewish cultural scene."

Among the guests and speakers will be Andriy Sadovyi, the Mayor of Lviv, Eliav Belotserkovsky, the ambassador of Israel in Ukraine, Oleg Vyasniakov, a businessman and honorary consul of Israel in Western Ukraine, as well as prominent members of the local government and the Jewish community of the Lviv region.

An additional attraction will be the participation of David Yonatan Greenberg, the son of the noted Israeli poet, Uri Zvi Greenberg, who was born in the nearby village of Bilyi Kamina and studied and wrote in Lviv. The younger Greenberg will speak about his father in a talk, "The Poet and Prophet." Other prominent speakers include Rabbi Yosef Mendelevitch, Osik Akselrod, Chairman of Limmud FSU in Ukraine and Director-General of Hillel, Gennady Polishuk, the head of Nativ in the Israel Prime Minister's Office, the poet Igor Irten'yev, Zeev Khanin, the Chief Scientist in the Israel Ministry of Absorption, Roman Kogan, Limmud FSU Executive Director, the historian Igor Shchupak, the Yiddish scholar Velvel Chernin, and others.
