Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Marilyn McCoy Player as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

Marilyn Player will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.

AUBURN, AL, December 03, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marilyn McCoy Player, 8th Grade Special Education English Inclusion Teacher and Case Manager at Auburn Junior High, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Marilyn Player will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.

Graduating from Tuskegee University with a degree in Elementary and Special Education in 1980, Marilyn Player began teaching special education high school students just a year later at a small, rural school in a Black Belt County in Alabama. Thirty-four years later, Mrs. Player is still teaching in the classroom, and she is now serving as an 8th Grade Inclusion Teacher and Case Manager at Auburn Junior High in Auburn, Alabama.

Required to facilitate the learning of students with Individualized Education Plans, or IEPs, within the classroom, Mrs. Player is also responsible for assisting students with their technology needs since all students are provided with a notebook computer for home and classroom use. As a special educator, it is also her responsibility to keep the administrators informed of specific rules and regulations as it pertains to students with IEPs to remain in compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as setting up annual IEP meetings, and making sure the IEPs are written within the timeframe set forth by state guidelines.

"As an educator, I have always sought to develop viable relationships with not only students, but their parents as well," Mrs. Player said. "I value the power of parental involvement. Being able to communicate with and involve parents in the educational processes of their children are key to becoming successful as a classroom teacher."

Taught by her parents, Amos and Beatrice McCoy, at a young age the importance of a good education and to never make fun of individuals who were less fortunate than she, becoming a special education teacher was a perfect fit for Mrs. Player.

Currently working toward her doctoral degree at Auburn University, Mrs. Player was nominated and selected as a Jackson Scholar due to her aspirations to teach on the collegiate level. Earning numerous accolades throughout her career, she's earned a Service Award from Greater New Life Church, Inc. International in 1990, an Outstanding Volunteer Service Award from Alabama Special Olympics in 1990, was named Secondary Educator of the Year by Macon County Council of Parent Teacher Association in 1997, and was named Teacher of the Year by Notasulga High School in Notasulga, Alabama in 2009. She also served as the first female President of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity (Tuskegee University Chapter), and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at Auburn University in 2009. In 2012, she was a Leadership Australia Participant while she acquired her Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Auburn University.
