Celebrate Valentine's Day Brunch and Dinner at Prairie Grass Cafe in Northbrook

    CHICAGO, IL, February 03, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Celebrating Valentine's Day, February 14, with your special loved one or the entire family at Prairie Grass Cafe (601 Skokie Blvd., Northbrook, 847-205-4433). Prairie Grass Cafe has become an annual ritual for many food lovers in Chicago's North Shore. This year, Chefs Sarah Stegner and George Bumbaris will prepare some delicious Valentine's Day brunch and dinner specials, including a complimentary heart-shaped cookie for children. The recipe, compliments of Sarah's grandmother, is below. The regular menu will also be available at both brunch and dinner.

Brunch is always a special occasion at Prairie Grass Cafe. Enjoying a delicious meal is the perfect way to spend Valentine's Day afternoon. Customer favorites include the Prairie Grass Cafe Signature Benedict ($12), Create Your Own Omelet ($10.75), Lemon Ricotta Pancakes ($12), Ancho Marinated Skirt Steak ($27), Traditional Smoked Salmon Plate ($15), and Sauteed Lake Superior Whitefish ($22). Dessert favorites include Mom's Seasonal Pie ($7.50), Sticky Toffee Date Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream ($8.50), and Warm Chocolate "Muk Muk" Cake with Creme Anglaise ($7.50).
Prairie Grass Cafe supports Green City Market and local sustainable farms including: Capriole Farm, Maple Creek Farm, North Country, River Valley Ranch, Bill Kurtis's Mettawa Manor, Genesis Garden, and Three Sisters Garden. Homemade products include handcrafted sausages, salad dressings, ice cream, and desserts.

- Salad: BLT Salad, with local "Mighty Vine" Tomatoes, Local Bacon, Blue Cheese Dressing ($10)
- Entree: Sauteed Bass with Herbed Bread Crumb topping, Roasted Root Vegetables, Cider Vinaigrette ($34)
- Entree: BBQ Braised "Creekstone" Short Ribs with Mashed Potatoes, Mirepoix of Vegetables, Homemade BBQ Sauce ($26)
- Dessert: Pear Financier, Poached Pear baked in an Almond Cake ($8.50)

A separate children's menu is available as is Prairie Grass Cafe's regular menu.
Sarah's Grandmother's Valentine's Day Heart Cookies
Chef Sarah Stegner and Chef George Bumbaris featuring all Natural Icing - No Food Dyes!

Ingredients
1/2 cup Oat Flour
1 cup Flour
3/4 tsp. Baking Powder
1/4 tsp. Salt
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Butter - Softened
1/2 Slightly Beaten Farmer's Egg
1 1/2 Tbsp. Local Cream
1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract

Instructions:
Mix together the oat flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Cut the butter into the flour mixture. Add the egg, cream and vanilla. Blend thoroughly. Chill the dough.

Roll the dough out on a floured surface to desired thickness and cut with heart cutter.

Bake cookies at 400 degree for 8-12 minutes or until very lightly browned around the edges. Allow to cool and frost with natural pink frosting.
Natural Pink Frosting:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Butter - Softened
3 cups Powdered Sugar
3 Tbsp. Local Cream
1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
One small red beet peeled

Instructions:
In a mixer blend the butter and sugar - add the cream and continue to beat until smooth. Add the vanilla and mix well.

Using a coarse microplane grater - grate approximately 2 Tbsp of red beet into frosting. Stir by hand with a rubber spatula till frosting is bright pink.

Transfer the frosting to a sieve and push through using the rubber spatula, leaving the beet pieces in the sieve.
