Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Cat Sherwin Beautifies a Wide-Range of Multitalented Clients

Stylist extraordinaire aides in storytelling through her refined hair and make-up artistry

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 29, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Cat Sherwin, an Australia-based hair stylist and makeup artist, has established herself as a widely-achieved talent within the vast entertainment industry with more than eleven years of experience across television, film, advertising and commercial platforms.

The ambitious Sherwin has worked numerous jobs with a diverse mixture of clients, including actor Joel Edgerton ("Warrior," "Black Mass" and "The Gift") and musician Tim Minchin ("Matilda" the Broadway Musical). Her work assignments span from "The Voice," "Celebrity Apprentice," ABC News'" "Sunrise," "The Morning Show," "Minute To Win It," "Insight" and "Isagenix," to many commercial assignments.

Moreover, Sherwin has made-up talent for renowned television networks like Channel 7, Foxtel, Fox Sports, Network Ten, ABC, and more and continues to do so today.

Before Sherwin's big break into the world of hair and makeup, she studied International Business at Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England. Upon graduating University, she joined Jaguar Cars on their Graduate program, where she made a professional career for 7 years. Then in 2003, she decided to forge a career path in the entertainment business, one that would exercise her creativity as a makeup artist and hair stylist.

"I've always loved art," Sherwin said. "I loved sci-fi and special effects/fantasy films as a child. I worked hard in school and was a straight-A student, but my passion was in creative work."

Sherwin's first commercial job came from a contact for a project she was referred to while in makeup school. "I worked on a budget/Indie horror film, 'I Know How Many Runs You Did Last Summer,'" said Sherwin. "The producer of this film also worked for a commercial company and 6-12 months later, got me on board with the commercial company she worked for on Ads and In-House Training DVDs for Dan Murphy's, Woolworths, and Coats Hire."

Her first television job at SBS in 2005-2006 was a result of similar networking in combination with her stellar background. "The departmental head at the time saw I'd worked at a photographic studio chain called Star Shots, and some established makeup artists had started there. It was a known place for getting a lot of people through the door in a short time, proving you could create camera ready hair and makeup under tight time constraints - a requirement for TV," Sherwin said.

In order to obtain these outstanding opportunities, persistence was key. It took, "A lot of door knocking," Sherwin said, as she came to Australia with no contacts. "[I] never took no for an answer. If the door was closed I'd go, 'well, where's the window?!'"

Originally born and raised in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, Sherwin left her home country to travel and start anew after leaving her job with Jaguar. Sherwin "wasn't fulfilled," she said of this particular line of work and, "yearned to work creatively. Working 24/7 on something that isn't your passion is soulless."

As a child, she'd always wanted to be a makeup artist and inquired about becoming one in her early teens. Despite coming from a traditional family where making such risky leaps wasn't the norm, the thought of one day realizing her dreams never left Sherwin. The industry, as Sherwin described, is, "Lots of dropping your whole life to run into jobs at the last minute." Making it in the entertainment industry as a hair and makeup artist meant she, "had to be super flexible."

Currently, the majority of Sherwin's time has been dedicated to working on various shows for Channel 7, "Sunrise," "Weekend Sunrise," "News," "The Morning Show," "The Daily Edition" and "Home & Away," to name a few. She has been working with Channel 7 since 2009. Day by day, her schedule varies. "I'm working a lot on "Sunrise" and "The Morning Show" with some weekend and afternoon News," Sherwin said.

Pip Lund is a makeup artist whose worked with clients Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor in George Lucas's sci-fi blockbuster "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith," and Cate Blanchett and Ralph Fiennes in "Oscar & Lucinda." Lund said of Sherwin, "I first had the pleasure of first working with Cat eight years ago at Channel 7. From the outset, I recognized Cat to be an Artist of rare and outstanding talent, displaying extraordinary tenacity and ability and an exemplary work ethic at all times. She is truly committed to her art and career."

The gigs Sherwin books more often than not require early mornings and late nights. Sometimes, Sherwin will even work multiple jobs in one day. "This morning, I'm working at Fox Sports News, then onto Channel 7 for the afternoon and evening weekend news," said Sherwin. This kind of schedule demands certain type persona, one that Sherwin embodies with perfection and great success.

"I have a real fire and drive. I'm always taking on lots of different projects, but it's what gives me inspiration and energy," Sherwin said.

Her versatility and adaptability has allowed her work the ability to span film, TV, fashion engagement, commercials, and corporate and publicity styling's. "I love variety and change on a personal level," Sherwin noted," It keeps me fresh and alive, inspired and at my creative best."

Through "Sunrise," Sherwin has worked with a number of top bands and celebrities including, actress Teresa Palmer ("Warm Bodies," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "The Choice"), author Deepak Chopra, musical group Duran Duran, actor John Cleese ("Monty Python and the Holy Grail," "A Fish Called Wanda" and "The Meaning of Life"), and versatile talent Natalie Bassingthwaite ("So You Think You Can Dance" and "X Factor Australia").

On a more regular basis, she beautifies the main hosts of the show: Natalie Barr, Edwina, Jodie Spears and Angela Cox. Off of "Australia's Got Talent" and "X Factor" promos, Sherwin has worked with recording artists Ronan Keating ("Boyzone"), Guy Sebastian (Australia's "X Factor"), Kyle Sandilands ("The Kyle and Jackie O Show"), and more.

Working with so many different personalities necessitates the skill of creating specific, unique looks for each client. When it comes to styling specifics, Sherwin insists that, "Styling is in the spirit. Styling is an essence, an inner spirit, that special something. If you can make someone feel confident and happy - sexy - then that will shine through." That being said, in order to succeed, Sherwin also stated that a good makeup artist and hair stylist must have a knack for, "creativity, have energy, an eye for detail, and the ability to draw on current fashions and pull them together into the context of a particular show, whilst also reflecting the tastes and personality of a performer, in certain situations."

Aside from working TV and film, Sherwin loves working red carpet events. She has done several jobs for Foxtel publicity and especially enjoyed making up the cast of "A Place to Call Home." Multiple award winning actress Sara Wiseman ("Mercy Peak," "A Place to Call Home" and "Jinx Sister") who worked closely with Sherwin on this project, as well as on other occasions, said, "Immediately I was impressed with her incredibly skill and artistry and ability to make everyone feel relaxed and amazing in her presence. She made me feel absolutely sensational and many commented on my stunning look, as they continue to do so when she has worked her magic! It's really quite phenomenal."

In the past, Sherwin has done special effects work (wounds, trauma, horror effects) and took part in a creative workshop with the guys that made the effects for "Star Wars Ep3 Revenge of the Sith," additionally creating her own female aquatic warrior. Nowadays, Sherwin uses a similar strand of creativity when helping to make a character transformation by using materials such as hairpieces, colored hairsprays, lashes, shading and contouring.

With up-to-date industry training, a gregarious, go-getter demeanor and an intense passion for her work, Wiseman states that Sherwin, "excels in her creative art and attention to detail. She is a warm, bubbly, dynamic person who immediately puts you at ease - essential for working with actors both on and off screen."
