Paragon Worldwide Outline Why Ireland Needs to Show More Support for Entrepreneurs

Proud to be part of Irelands growing business landscape, sales and event marketing firm Paragon Worldwide have voiced their concerns that entrepreneurs and small businesses aren't getting enough support from the government.

CORK, IRELAND, March 04, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New research and news articles have discovered widespread dissatisfaction with the Government's support of SMEs, as political parties continue to contend the merits of their business policies ahead of the upcoming Irish election. SMEs in Ireland account for 70% of all employment, and over 60% of these enterprise owners believe that the government isn't doing enough to support their business - and are anxious that costs must be kept down to protect their position in competitive markets.

So far the wants of the government are failing to align with the need of small business owners. The government wants quality, well-paid jobs for Irish people and wealth creation that is spread evenly, supporting services for the people (through taxation). They also want to ensure Ireland remains competitive in order to retain Irish entrepreneurs and attract foreign ones (Irish Times, 2016). However, in order to create a virtuous circle of re-investment in entrepreneurial activity, Paragon Worldwide believe that changes must be made to share options, capital gains tax, and the accessibility of funding.

Paragon Worldwide believes that there is a general consensus among SMEs that Ireland needs more entrepreneurs, and to make that happen, the government needs to make it a more financially attractive endeavour than regular employment. Paragon Worldwide strongly argues that under no situation should an entrepreneur pay more in tax than a regular employee of a larger company, but right now that's unfortunately a hindering reality.

For the next government to achieve its own objectives Paragon Worldwide contends that the capital gains tax should reward risk-taking entrepreneurs. Indeed, the firm believes it is essential that entrepreneurs are given the same tax credits as employees, and states that the government should abolish the 3% point USC supplement that entrepreneurs pay on income exceeding EUR100,000.

In addition, Paragon Worldwide suggests that the government should incentivise private sectors to provide investments in start-ups and SMEs. Currently, investment in startups is not rewarding in relation to the amount of risk involved, and Irish people have preferred to leave their money in deposit accounts or look to property investment. Instead of relying on Enterprise Ireland to continue providing early stage investment, it would be far more efficient for the private sector to handle responsibility in this area, and reduce the government's exposure to the financial risk of start-ups. In essence, the government needs to ensure that start-ups are getting the plant food and sunlight they require for growth - cash in the form of equity investment.

The UK's Enterprise Investment Scheme has demonstrated how effective incentives for angel investment in start-ups can be, and Paragon Worldwide believes that the creation of an effective Irish equivalent is long past due.
