U.S. Appeals Court Upholds NFL's $1B Concussion Settlement

Compensation Timeline Still Unknown; Eligible Former Players Can Receive a Portion of Settlement Funding Now Via Atlas Legal Funding

SECAUCUS, NJ, April 21, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Atlas Legal Funding announced today that a federal appeals court upheld the National Football League's estimated $1 billion concussion settlement, calling the agreement "imperfect but fair". The lawsuit was brought on behalf of more than 5,000 retired players, but the settlement could cover more than 21,000, with payments of up to $5 million each to players diagnosed with particular neurological disorders.

The settlement does not address chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which has been linked to concussions, other than for a player that is already deceased. Because of this, roughly 200 retirees objected to the agreement, and argued the deal unfairly favors currently injured retirees and leaves thousands of former players who have not yet been diagnosed with neurological diseases without a remedy.

Professor Samuel Issacharoff, who presented arguments on behalf of retired players, stated, "We are dealing with a situation in which NFL players are hurting. We are going to give people serious compensation for truly terrible injuries."

Compensation Timeline for Former Players Still Unknown; Eligible Former Players Can Receive Legal Funding Now

It may take some time before monetary award amounts are determined and claims are disbursed to the former players involved in this lawsuit. As of now, the case duration and timeline for completion is still unknown.

"For former players with debilitating injuries that are in need of funding to support their families, pay medical bills and to keep up financially with other life needs, funding options are available now," said Jeremy Fink, Esq., COO of Atlas Legal Funding. "Physical and neurological impairments caused by NFL injuries make it difficult to work and support families; we encourage eligible players that are in need to contact us for funding today."

A Legal Funding Cash Advance is Not a Loan

A legal funding cash advance is a non-recourse advance that is tied to the recovery of a legal case. If a case does not end up settling, then there is no personal obligation to repay the advance.

Atlas Legal Funding is currently providing legal funding cash advances to former NFL players involved in the NFL Lawsuit Settlement under the current Settlement agreement while they wait for the case to resolve.
