Carpet Backing: What's Behind Your Carpet?

Do you know what is hiding under your carpets?

WORCESTER, MA, May 19, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When most people set out to choose carpet for their homes, they are focused on the aesthetics of the carpet itself - its color, weight, weave, durability, and how it will look once it has been installed. But there is another side to the carpet, and that's the side that people don't see once it's installed: carpet backing.

What is carpet backing?
Two components comprise carpet backing. The first is the primary backing, and that is what the carpet fibers are tufted to in order for them to hold together in a single, seamless piece. But the secondary backing, which is affixed to the primary backing, is the component that gives the carpet its structure and strength. This is the backing that is visible when looking at the underside of a carpet sample.

What is carpet backing made of?
Carpet backing can be made from a variety of materials, from natural fibers to polyurethane and vinyl. Jute is a natural material composed of plant fiber, and it provides a sturdy backing for carpets. Polyurethane is a rubbery substance that anchors tufts firmly in place and prevents them from coming loose, but it is not as eco-friendly as natural fibers. A recent trend in the carpet industry is to use recycled materials to fashion carpet backing, which can save consumers money while also benefitting the environment.

Materials like SoftBac and LuxuryBac are heavy backings that may raise the price of a carpet for the consumer, but provide a soft feel and protect against scuffing of baseboards and underlying floors. These backings also help keep the carpet from wrinkling prematurely since it helps the carpet to lay flatter for a longer period of time. In addition to these brands, there are a variety of other products to choose from, and it's a good idea to learn the benefits and disadvantages of the options available.

Why is carpet backing important?
Carpet backing serves many purposes. To begin with, it helps to offer protection to both the floor beneath and the carpet itself; while carpet pads add insulation and protection to floors, the backing is also a carpet's first defense against mold and bacteria that might seep up from beneath. Certain types of backings serve specifically as moisture barriers so that spills and leaks don't penetrate the carpet and damage the floor. Backing can also reduce noise inside of a home. And a quality carpet backing contributes to a heavier carpet with a softer feel that will last longer, maintaining its shape and size.

It's important not to skimp on carpet backing when installing carpet that is meant to last. Since there are multiple backing options, consumers should weigh the pros and cons of each when choosing carpet. As always, proper installation is key to a carpet that looks beautiful and wears well, so working with a company that has a well-established history in flooring is the safest bet when selecting carpet.
