Businesses in Australia that are filing intellectual property for trademarks, patents and designs, it was confirmed that 52% of applications were from non-residents, 33% were from Australian small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), 13% from private applicants and only 2% from large firms. The report by IP Australia stated that the number of applications filed by Australian SMEs has increased over the last 10 years and that firms owning IP rights tend to last longer than firms without.
