Born in South Australia in 1931, Dr Lawrence holds the distinction of being Australia's first professor of social work. He was also responsible for the first child abuse inquiry in Australia. Dr. Lawrence spent the majority of his career at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), which he joined in 1968 to head the School of Social Work. He served as head of the School until 1982. For three decades from 1961, he taught social policy to countless students and from 1980 until 1996 played a central role in the establishment and governance of the national Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW. A distinguished professor emeritus since 1991, Dr Lawrence remains a respected member of the UNSW community. He has just completed his autobiography, Seeking Social Good: a Life Worth Living.
Dr. Lawrence, who graduated with honors from the University of Adelaide and with a diploma in social science in 1953, has always been committed to excellence in academia. A recipient of Senior Fulbright Awards and a Rhodes Scholar, he holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Oxford University in England, as well as a Ph.D. from Australian National University. Prior to joining UNSW, he was a social worker for the Commonwealth Department of Social Services in Adelaide, and a senior lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of Sydney in Australia.
Dr. Lawrence has also been an active member in the social work community worldwide as a visiting lecturer and professor, and through affiliations with professional and philanthropic organizations, and contributions to industry-related publications. In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Lawrence has been featured in seven editions of Who's Who in the World published since 1998.
