Dr. Marlin Mattson Recognized for Excellence in Medicine Education

Dr. Mattson has been on the full-time faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College at Cornell University for more than 40 years and is now Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry

The son of Conrad Roy and Ruth Viola Thompson, Dr. Marlin Mattson parlays more than four decades' experience into his current role in health care. Soon after graduating from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in 1961, and a Doctor of Medicine in 1965, he embarked on his prestigious career in medicine. He first served as an intern and medical resident with the Cornell University program at Bellevue and Memorial Hospitals in New York City from 1965 to 1967, and went on to a residency in psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinical of The New York Hospital in 1969, where he became the chief resident in psychiatry from 1972-1973.

Dr. Mattson has held several positions since then, including associate medical director and assistant medical director at the Payne Whitney Clinical of The New York Hospital, head of the quality assurance program within the Department of Psychiatry at The New York Hospital/New York-Presbyterian Hospital, assistant and associate medical director for quality assurance at New York Hospital's Westchester Division, and associate vice chairman of quality management/compliance for the Department of Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic and Westchester Division of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

A diplomate of the American Board Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Mattson has been on the full-time faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College at Cornell University for more than 40 years and is now Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry. He has received several accolades, including the Excellence in Medical Student Education Award in 2003, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the New York County District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association in 2003, and the Planetree Caregiver Physician Champion Award in 2012. He is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and was named Distinguished Life Fellow in 2004 by the American Psychiatric Association. Additionally, Dr. Mattson has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Mattson was the editor of the Manual of Psychiatric Quality Assurance in 1992, and has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and chapters to books. He is a member of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Committee at Weill Cornell Medical College. He served on New York-Presbyterian Hospital's Cultural Competency & Work Force Diversity Task Force. Recently, he completed 14 years on the board of directors for URAC (Utilization Review Accreditation Commission) and now serves on the board of directors for the SaveLife Foundation USA. Further, he is a member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, the board of directors for the New York County Medical Society, and the board of visitors at Manhattan Psychiatric Center.
