SILVER SPRING, MD, August 24, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Paul Pallansch, Dot-Connector/Dioramist for Up-Close Realism, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in his field through Industry Experts Magazine.

Since Paul Pallansch was just a boy, he was always working with his hands building models from scratch or from kits. Now, as a Museum Model Maker, Pallansch builds dioramas of historical events that also tell clear stories. He designs and builds these models to make them accessible to the general public, not just the enthusiasts, and he strives to get people interested in the models' subjects who might otherwise pass them by.

Pallansch has devoted almost his entire life to this very specific industry. Learning early on that he could actually earn a living building models and dioramas, all of his work choices have at least indirectly contributed to this rewarding career, which include sculpting and prop-making for theater and film, rock carving, illustration, writing, animation, and drafting. His interest in history has proved to be not only crucial research, but also inspiration for compelling diorama subjects.

The desire to become a Dot-Connector came later as Pallansch realized how fascinating and passionate museum experts were, yet how that passion was sometimes missing from the exhibits. He even saw cases where his favorite medium, the diorama, was not done in an interesting way. The dot-connecting idea was simply listening to the experts talk about their collections, then connecting them to their visitors by pointing out the parts of their stores that needed to make it into the exhibits.

"I show them what to leave out, but also what to leave in," Pallansch said. "Because they know so much about their collection, it's hard to remember which of those facts are obvious to visitors and which are not."

Pallansch will also take it a step further by taking these stories and writing them in ways that ordinary visitors will understand, explaining, "I don't dumb them down, I just simplify them and make sure that the crucial facts are clear so that people understand the concepts behind them."

Pallansch also suggests the most appropriate medium to express a particular idea. It won't necessarily be a diorama. Often, it will be an animation, an interactive, or even a brief, well-written text panel. What matters to him most is that the stories be told well.

"Naturally, I'm always looking at exhibits in museums everywhere, getting ideas for a synergy that will work for my next project," Pallansch added. "It's helpful to not only notice what works, but also what doesn't work and why. The 'why' is the most important aspect I have to offer in museum consulting. It won't matter what data you gather about a particular exhibit piece if you don't understand why it works or why it doesn't. I can offer that insight."
