Brian Thompson, Ph.D., Honored for Excellence in Optical Engineering

Dr. Brian Thompson is noted for his contributions to the University of Rochester and global optics community



He has written nearly 200 scientific and technical papers and articles, and in 1989, he co-wrote "The New Physical Optics Notebook: Tutorials in Fourier Optics."

    PITTSFORD, NY, September 12, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Brian Thompson has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A lauded member of the University of Rochester community, Dr. Thompson has been a Provost Emeritus professor of the school since 1994. Prior to his formal retirement, he held a number of roles at the University of Rochester, including director of the Institute of Optics, dean of engineering, and William F. May professor of engineering. A distinguished professor and optics scientist, Dr. Thompson was most noted for his work in coherent optics, holography, phase microscopy, and image processing. His many accomplishments during his 26 years at the school were formally recognized in 2009 upon the creation of the Brian J. Thompson Professorship in Optical Engineering.

Dr. Thompson, who originally hails from England, spent two years in the British Army prior to earning a Bachelor of Science in technology from the University of Manchester in 1955. He remained at the school to work as an assistant lecturer on optical physics and fellow in the physics department until 1959, when he received a Ph.D. Dr. Thompson then taught physics at the University of Leeds until relocating to the United States in 1962. He worked as a senior physicist and manager in the industry before joining the faculty at the University of Rochester in 1968.

Additionally, Dr. Thompson has become a prolific writer and editor on his topics of expertise. He has written nearly 200 scientific and technical papers and articles, and in 1989, he co-wrote "The New Physical Optics Notebook: Tutorials in Fourier Optics," which has now been published in four different languages. He has also edited numerous professional publications, including the Optical Engineering journal from 1990 to 1997.

Dr. Thompson has been an active member of his professional community, as well. A fellow of the Institute of Physics, he is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society. He has been very involved with The Optical Society, serving on its board of directors from 1969 to 1972 and on its executive committee from 1970 to 1973, as well as serving as associate editor of its journal from 1966 to 1977. A life member of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, he served as president of the organization from 1974 to 1976. He received a number of awards from the society, including the President's Award in 1967, the Pezzuto Award and the Kingslake Medal in 1978, a Gold Medal in 1986, a Director Award in 1998 and a Vikram Award in 2011.

These and other achievements were taken into consideration when Dr. Thompson was chosen to be featured in the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 3rd edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 23rd through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World. He has also appeared in several editions of Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in American Education.
