John Raymer, Ph.D., Honored for Excellence in English Education

Dr. John Raymer brought his expertise to inmates at Westville Correctional Facility



An esteemed literature and language professor now retired, Dr. Raymer was a respected member of the faculty at Holy Cross College at Notre Dame, Ind.

    NOTRE DAME, IN, September 21, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. John Raymer has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An esteemed literature and language professor now retired, Dr. Raymer was a respected member of the faculty at Holy Cross College at Notre Dame, Ind. He began teaching at the school in 1990 and has since served in a number of leadership and committee positions. In 2012, Dr. Raymer became a founding member of the Westville Education Initiative, an academic collaboration between the University of Notre Dame and Holy Cross College that provides education programs to inmates at Westville Correctional Facility. Dr. Raymer taught for the Initiative until 2016.
Dr. Raymer's own academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University, a Master of Arts from National University of Ireland, a Ph.D. from Ohio University, and postdoctoral studies at Purdue University. He began teaching as an assistant professor of English at Purdue University Calumet in 1976. His teaching career continued at Indiana University South Bend, where he served as an adjunct assistant professor, and at Saint Mary's College, where he worked as an adjunct lecturer. In 1990, Dr. Raymer became an assistant English professor at Holy Cross College and was named first full professor at that college in 2015. He also lectured at Purdue University's North Central Campus from 2008 to 2012.

In addition to his work inside the classroom, Dr. Raymer has contributed a number of articles to professional journals over the years. He was also a contributing editor to the book "The Hole in Me Since the Day You Died," published in 2005. Dr. Raymer supports the National Audubon Society, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Defenders of Wildlife. He has been active in the South Bend community through many nonprofit organizations and events.

Dr. Raymer is a member of the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Epsilon Sigma. He also received several awards over the years for his academic and philanthropic endeavors, including being named an Outstanding Mentor of University of Notre Dame bound students in 2005. His various accomplishments were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 61st through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 36th through 42nd editions of Who's Who in the West, and the 32nd and 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
