An attorney with Warner Norcross & Judd, Mr. Thoms has been a highly regarded attorney in the state of Michigan since 1980. Previously in private practice with Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone, and on his own at David M. Thoms & Associates, he established himself as an authority on matters of law, leading him to become Lawyer of the Year in 2014. Also in recognition of professional excellence, Mr. Thoms was named among Best Lawyers in America every year since 2005 and earned the title of Michigan SuperLawyer every year since 2004. Mr. Thoms is a decorated officer through the l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques, and earned a Commander Order of Salvador Award from the Salvador Dali Museum in Florida.
Mr. Thoms is an entrusted member of the program committee of financial and estate planning in Detroit, for which he also sits on the board of directors. He gives back to his community as a member of the advanced board and chairman of the nominating and executive committees of the Metropolitan Detroit Salvation Army. For the Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross, Mr. Thoms has served as secretary treasurer, vice chairman and member of the board of directors of bylaws and the property committee. To prepare for his career, Mr. Thoms earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kalamazoo College, a master's degree in urban planning from Wayne State University, an LLM in taxation from Wayne State University and a JD from the University of Detroit. He was admitted to practice in the state of Michigan in 1980, later passing the New York State bar in 1995. In doing so, he took on additional career-related projects with the New York University Tax Institute, through which he presented on many matters and conferences over the years. Today, Mr. Thoms stays at the top of his profession by serving as a member of the American Bar Association, for which he previously acted as a chairman of a subcommittee on probate and estate planning and a member of the charitable trust committee. He is also a member of the Federal Bar Association, the Oakland County Bar Association, the Detroit Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, the New York Bar Association, the Bar Association of the City of New York, the American Planning Association, and the Grosse Pointe Club.
Looking to the future, Mr. Thoms intends to continue working as an attorney and giving back to his community through his involvement with civic projects.
