Jay Goldberg Honored for Excellence in Civil and Criminal Law

Jay Goldberg is a NYC-based solo practitioner with an accomplished professional history



One of his most memorable roles was as special assistant to James B. Donovan, a noted American lawyer who affected the transfer of Russian spy Rudolph Abel for Francis Gary Powers.

Mr. Goldberg is an accomplished attorney who has been a solo practitioner in New York City since 1963. Focusing on civil and criminal law, he tries cases in both state and federal courts. Mr. Goldberg, who holds a JD from Harvard University, was admitted to practice by the New York State Bar in 1957. He has since been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as the 2nd, 4th, and 9th circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. In 1954, he graduated magna cum laude from Brooklyn College.

At the start of his legal career, Mr. Goldberg worked as assistant district attorney for the New York County District Attorney's Office. He was then a special assistant to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, counselor to the United States Department of Justice in Washington, DC, and appointed Acting United States Attorney for the Northwest District of Indiana. One of his most memorable roles was as special assistant to James B. Donovan, a noted American lawyer who affected the transfer of Russian spy Rudolph Abel for Francis Gary Powers.

Mr. Goldberg also applied his legal expertise to serve as a lecturer in trial practice at Harvard Law School. Since 1989, he has been a member of the U.S. District Court's Southern District of New York Committee on Grievances. He is the author of three books: Preparation and Trial of Criminal Cases within the Second Circuit (2009); Preparation and Trial of A Federal Criminal Case (2010); and Techniques in the Defense of a Federal Criminal Case (2012). Additionally, he has been the editorial manager for the legal publication White Collar Crime Law Report, and a contributor of articles to professional journals and published more than twenty three articles in legal publications.

In a poll conducted by a New York magazine, selected lawyers and judges were asked to answer this question: "Who Are Manhattan's Most Powerful, Talented, and Fearsome Prosecutors and Defenders?" The survey resulted in this statement:
"Goldberg is a lawyer's lawyer, a defense attorney whom colleagues and prosecutors alike cite as exemplary of the mix of qualities that make a lawyer effective." The consensus, as reported in the survey, was that: "Goldberg is the best trial lawyer in town."

In light of his accomplishments, Mr. Goldberg received a Merit Award from the New York Criminal Bar Association in 1989 for advocacy of individual rights. He has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in American Law published since 1993. Mr. Goldberg has also appeared in numerous editions of Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World, and in the 31st edition of Who's Who in Finance and Business.

Mr. Goldberg has been married to his wife, Rema, since 1959. The couple has two children: Justin and Julie. Mr. Goldberg is also a member of the Friars Club, and he served as governor of the organization from 1988 to 1992.
