Mr. Pringle never planned to have a career writing children's books. Curious about nature, he earned a Bachelor of Science in wildlife biology at Cornell University in 1958, and a Master of Science in the same field from the University of Massachusetts. In 1961-1962 he taught science at Lima (NY) High School. After writing articles that were published in magazines, his writing career became full time when he was hired as a beginning editor and staff writer of a children's science magazine (Nature and Science) published at The American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Although the magazine ceased publication in 1970, by then Mr. Pringle's first book had been published, he was working on others, and his freelance writing career was successfully launched.
In recognition of his work as a children's author, Mr. Pringle has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. He has also been the recipient of the Special Conservation Award from the National Wildlife Federation, the Eva L. Gordon Award, the Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children, the Nonfiction Award from the Washington Post-Children's Book Guild, and a Lifetime Achievement Prize for Excellence in Science Books from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Furthermore, in 2006 he was awarded a fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and is a member of the Authors Guild.
