Dr. Edgar Raines Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in History

    ALEXANDRIA, VA, November 22, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Edgar Raines has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Raines has devoted his career to education and history. From 1976 until 1979 he served as the assistant academic dean at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In 1979 he went to Washington, D.C., as a historian for the Office of Air Force History. The following year he moved to the U.S. Army Center of Military History, also in Washington, where he remained for over 30 years until his retirement in July 2011 as a senior historian. During the course of his career, Dr. Raines was the chairman of the book selection committee and later president of the Military Classics Seminar. He also served as a historian on special assignment with the Army Operations Center during the Grenada intervention, 1983; the Army Staff's Ad Hoc Committee on Department of Defense Reform, 1985; the Directorate of Roles and Missions in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, 1994-95; the secretary of the Army's Realignment Task Force, 2001-02; and the Chief of Staff, Army, Transition Team, 2007. Most recently, he served as a contract historian with the Joint History Office in the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, 2015-16. He is the author of several books and articles to include Eyes of Artillery: The Origins of Modern Army Aviation in World War II (2000) and The Rucksack War: U.S. Army Operational Logistics in Grenada, 1983 (2010), which has been used in classes at the Army War College.

When queried about his success, Dr. Raines cited interest in history, excellent teachers, hard work, the support of family and colleagues, and more than a little luck. In recognition of his accomplishments, he has received the Harry E. Pratt Award, an Army Historical Foundation award, and a Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award among others. He was also selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.

To prepare for a career in his field, Dr. Raines earned a bachelor of arts in history and a master of arts in history from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1966 and 1968 respectively. Later he received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He continued to develop his professional skills, knowledge, and insights through his membership in various historical societies. He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Society for Military History, the Society for History in the Federal Government, and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.
