Ian Baker Honored for Professional Excellence in the Field of Cultural and Environmental Heritage Preservation

Ian Baker is a cultural historian, anthropologist, and art curator who has written seven books and numerous academic articles on Himalayan and Tibetan art history, traditional medicine, and Buddhist philosophy. He received his B.A. in Art History from Middlebury College and an M.A. in English Literature at the University of Oxford. He pursued further graduate studies in Medical Anthropology at University College London and is currently conducting doctoral research in the History of Health and Medicine at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. Ian Baker is also an associate of the National Geographic Society, a world leader in geography, cartography and exploration, who named him in 2000 as one of seven "Explorers for the Millennium" for his documentation of a waterfall in the world's deepest gorge in Tibet that had been the source of myth and speculation among geographers for more than a century. He has won awards for his photography, collaborated on multiple film projects, and has contributed to numerous academic journals and magazines, including National Geographic. His books include The Heart of the World: A Journey to the Last Secret Place, The Dalai Lamas Secret Temple: Tantric Wall Paintings from Tibet, The Tibetan Art of Healing, Buddhas of the Celestial Gallery, and the forthcoming Tibetan Yoga: Secrets from the Source, Drinking the Milk of Dragons: Travels among the Alchemist Wizards of Burma, and Secret River: Charting the Himalayan Hidden Land of Pemako. He was lead curator of the Wellcome Trust's 2015-2016 record-breaking exhibition 'Tibet's Secret Temple: Body, Mind and Meditation in Tantric Buddhism' and is currently co-curator of a forthcoming exhibition on Tantric Buddhist art at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. As an executive board member of the International Society of Bhutan Studies, a Fellow of The Explorers Club, and a multiple grant recipient of National Geographic's Expedition's Council, he continues to conduct field research in remote parts of the Himalayas in the areas of oral history, ethnopharmacology, and indigenous conservation paradigms. In Bhutan, he is collaborating with neuroscientists from the University of Singapore and King's College London on studies pertaining to the neurophysiological and cognitive correlates of Tibetan Buddhist meditative practices.

Ian Baker has been featured in eight editions of Who's Who in America and five editions of Who's Who in the World.
