Dr. Greenough is a medical educator who is especially noted for his extensive work as the former director of the International Center for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research in Bangladesh. He served as director of the organization from 1979 to 1985, and has served as chairman of its Endowment Fund Committee since 1997. Additionally, Dr. Greenough has been a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine since 1983. Since 1985, he has also been a professor of international health in Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health, as well as a member of Johns Hopkins University's Geriatric Medicine Division. As a physician, Dr. Greenough has always made hands-on bedside care a priority. In 1953, Dr. Greenough graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College with a Bachelor of Arts. He went on to graduate cum laude with an MD from Harvard University in 1957. Dr. Greenough continued cultivating his medical skills as an intern and assistant resident at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was then a senior research fellow at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y., and a senor resident at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Mass.

Dr. Greenough first began working in Bangladesh in 1962 as a staff associate at the National Heart Institute's Cholera Research Laboratory in Dhaka. During this time, he served as senior surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service. After three years, he returned to the United States to become chief of the Infectious Diseases Division of Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine. He directed the school's Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program from 1974 to 1977.

In addition to these professional roles, Dr. Greenough has established his reputation as a trusted consultant and sought-after speaker in the field. He has held leadership and advisory positions with numerous organizations, including the National Institutes of Health's Bacteriology and Mycology Study Section, the Bangladesh Information Center and the Bangladesh Foundation, and the International Child Health Foundation. Dr. Greenough has also served as an editor for medical publications, and contributed articles to professional journals and chapters to books. He holds a number of patents in the field as well.

Dr. Greenough is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, which honored him with the Mary Betty Stevens Award for Excellence in in Clinical Investigation prize in 2012. His further professional affiliations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Bangladesh Medical Society, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, among others. He is also a member of the American Geriatric Society, from which he received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award from Humanism in Medicine in 2014.

Dr. Greenough's efforts have resulted in several other awards and honors over the course of his career as well, such as an Outstanding Service Award from the Bangladeshi-American Foundation and an International Prize in Medicine from the King Faisal Foundation. All of his achievements were featured in the 47th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, and the 22nd through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World. He has also appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
