Keith Cottam Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Library Science

    CASPER, WY, January 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Keith Cottam has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Keith Cottam is a retired librarian, educator and administrator who was born in St. George, Utah. In 1963, he graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science, and then went on to obtain a Master of Library Science from Pratt Institute in 1965. While pursuing the MLS degree, Mr. Cottam received additional training at Brooklyn Public Library, where he also worked as an adult services librarian and assistant instructor in the reading improvement program. After graduating from the Pratt Institute, Mr. Cottam relocated to Illinois to launch his career in earnest as an assistant social sciences library instructor at Southern Illinois University.

Mr. Cottam's career path next took him to librarian and professorship roles at Brigham Young University, the University of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt University. With experiences as a head librarian, acting director and associate professor under his belt, he first joined the University of Wyoming in Laramie in 1983 as director of libraries. He remained in this position until 2000, serving as professor as well. Mr. Cottam then spent a year as dean of libraries for the school.

In 2001, Mr. Cottam switched campuses to become associate dean of the University of Wyoming Outreach School and director of the University of Wyoming's Casper College Center. He has been an emeritus professor of the University of Wyoming at Casper since 2005; however, from 2008 to 2010, he returned to work as interim director of the Casper College Goodstein Foundation Library.

A member of the American Library Association, Mr. Cottam is a past president of the Tennessee Library Association and the Wyoming Library Association. He is also a member of the honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Phi Mu. Mr. Cottam was proud to be named a fellow of the Council on Library and Information Resources in 1975, and a senior fellow of the UCLA Graduate School of Library Information Science in 1985. He is the author of "Writer's Research Handbook," initially published in 1977 with a second edition published in 1978. Additionally, Mr. Cottam is a past editor of the Utah Libraries Journal and a past member of the editorial board of the RQ Journal.

Along with these professional endeavors, Mr. Cottam is a past president and member of the board of directors of the Casper Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as a past member of the board of directors of the Wyoming Commission on National and Community Service. He is a past president of the Platte River Parkway Trust, and was involved with the Platte River Trails Trust for 10 years. Furthermore, Mr. Cottam found time to participate in the Leadership Wyoming Training Program. He has been a volunteer docent for the National Historical Trails Interpretive Center since 2006.

Now retired, Mr. Cottam has more time for his hobbies, which include freelance writing and gardening. He continues to reside in Casper, Wyo. with his wife, Mary. His many accomplishments have been featured in the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, the 28th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the West, and the 26th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
