American Health Council Names Kirk Dombrowski, Ph.D. to Education Board

Dr. Kirk Dombrowski of The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council.



    LINCOLN, NE, January 18, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Kirk Dombrowski of The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council. He will be sharing his knowledge and expertise on Social Network Analysis in Health, Rural Public Health, and Drug Abuse.

With over eighteen years of experience in the field of Cultural Anthropology and Sociology, Dr. Dombrowski offers valuable insight in his role as John Bruhn Professor of Sociology at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Established in 1869, The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is recognized as the world's first undergraduate psychology laboratory.

As a John Bruhn Professor of Sociology at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 2014, Dr. Dombrowski's day-to-day responsibilities include teaching, researching on health disparities in the Great Plains, Native Health issue and substance abuse in Alaska, and HIV and drug abuse in Puerto Rico.

Throughout the course of his training, he earned his PhD in Cultural Anthropology from City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School and University Center in 1998. Subsequently, he received his Master's in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1993. In 1989, he completed his Bachelor of Art in Anthropology from the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Dombrowski's research interest developed after his dissertation in Alaska where he witnessed substance abuse. Upon his return to New York in the 90s, he decided to become a problem-driven researcher due to the increase of HIV and substance abuse. He attributes his success to discovering new methods to tackling problems.

Dr. Dombrowski maintains affiliations with the following organizations: American Sociological Association, American Anthropological Association & Society for Applied, Anthropology, and Canadian Anthropology Society.

His commitment to his research has resulted in various positions such as Director of UNL's Minority Health Disparities Initiative (MHDI), Principal Investigator at the REACH Lab, and Regional Speaker on Health Equity and Disparities (HIV and Substance Abuse).

Looking ahead, Dr. Dombrowski hopes to continue working on HIV research in Puerto Rico, more outreach with medical colleagues, and obtain grants from the NIH.
