LAKE SUCCESS, NY, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, LLP, today announced the firm's 2017 Scholarship Program, providing an opportunity for students entering their first year of college to compete for a total of $2,250 in scholarship money through an essay competition.

"The attorneys and staff at Cohen & Jaffe understand the value of higher education, and we are committed to helping more young people achieve their goals," said attorney Richard S. Jaffe, one of the firm's named partners. "We also welcome the opportunity afforded by this competition to raise awareness about the critical issue of medical errors, the losses they cause and potential ways to make medical treatment safer."

This marks the third consecutive year that the Long Island personal injury law firm has held a scholarship competition. This year's essay topics focus on the prevention of personal injuries and medical errors. Entrants must submit an original essay totaling at least 500 words, but no more than 750, on one of the following topics:

- At the Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, LLP, we truly value being able to help others after they have been injured whether it be due to personal injury or medical malpractice. Describe a time you drastically impacted someone else and improved their life.

- Whether it be from a critical error made during a procedure, or not paying attention, there are a number of reasons why patients are harmed or injured at medical facilities every day in the U.S. At the Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, we fight for justice when someone is harmed. Considering your research, what guidelines would you develop to ensure safety precautions are adhered to at medical facilities? What needs to be changed to protect patients? Tell us your ideas.

The author of the winning essay will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship. The firm will award $250 each to three applicants who receive honorable mention.

The firm is already accepting applications, and the deadline for submissions is April 3. Judges will announce 10 finalists on April 24. The public will then have the opportunity to vote on the finalists' submissions between April 27 and May 25. The firm will announce the winners on June 1.

Details about the competition and how to enter are available on the firm's website.
