American Health Council Names Emmanuel Buys, Ph.D. to Education Board

Dr. Emmanuel Buys of the Massachusetts General Hospital Research Institute and Harvard Medical School has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council.



    NEW YORK, NY, February 08, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Emmanuel Buys of the Massachusetts General Hospital Research Institute and Harvard Medical School has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council. He will be sharing his knowledge and expertise in Anesthesia, Ophthalmology, Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology.

With two decades of cross-disciplinary research, Dr. Buys offers valuable insight in his role as an Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Based in Boston, Massachusetts, MGH is ranked as one of the top hospitals in the United States of America focused on providing the best quality of healthcare to improve the health and well-being of the community. At MGH, healthcare professionals receive innovative training as they will be the leaders of the future in medicine.

Dr. Buys utilizes his role to prepare the next generation of scientist. He shares knowledge on glaucoma, cancer chemotherapy, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal motility and brown adipose tissue function, brain and lung development, renal function and skeletal muscle function, and diving physiology. His day-to-day responsibilities include coordinating research projects with academic and industry partners, obtaining and managing grants, writing manuscripts, consulting for pharmaceutical companies, mentoring undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows, lecturing, and overseeing administrative duties.

Throughout the course of his education, Dr. Buys earned his PhD in Biotechnology (2003), Master of Science in Biotechnology (1996), and Bachelor of Science in Biology (1994) from Ghent University (Belgium) before pursuing post-doctoral training at MGH and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Buys chose the field of biotechnology to pursue translational research and mentor the next generation of basic and clinical scientist. He attributes his level of success to having great mentors, and being surrounded by brilliant colleagues.

Dr. Buys is the recipient of the following honors: AHA Merit Award Young Investigator Award ; Winner of the MGH Research Fellow Poster Celebration, AHA Merit Award for Young Investigators, Poster of Excellence 5th Annual MGH Poster Celebration, Best Team Abstract for MGH Clinical Research Day, Finalist for the Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz - Basic Science Research Prize for Young Investigator, Best Team Abstract for MGH Clinical Research Day, and Department of Anesthesia Poster Award (First Prize) for MGH Clinical Research Day.

Dr. Buys maintains affiliations with the following organizations: Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA); The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO); American Society of Anesthesiologists; Nitric Oxide Society; Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists; International Society for Eye Research (ISER); HFSA - The Heart Failure Society of America. He serves on the MGH IACUC, the MGH Executive Committee of Research (ECOR), the ECOR PhD Steering Committee; the MGH Department of Anesthesia Research Council, and is the Departmental representative on the MGH Safety Chemical Hygiene Task Force and the MGH ECOR.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Buys is most proud of the success of his mentees and his translational research, resulting in three pending patents, which he hopes will leave a mark in the world of biotechnology and medicine. He has published extensively in high impact peer-reviewed journals and serves as a Principal Investigator on numerous grants, including from the NIH and NSF.

Looking to the future, he hopes to continue progressing in his research, identifying novel therapies for glaucoma and cardiovascular disease and bringing those therapies to clinical trials, and eventually to the clinic.

In his free time, Dr. Buys enjoys spending time with his family. As a Belgian native, Dr. Buys is fluent in French, Dutch, and English.
