Beverly Hunter Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Educational Research

For five decades, Beverly Hunter pioneered applications of advanced technologies to learning and teaching in schools, universities, industry, community, and government agencies.



    AMISSVILLE, VA, February 14, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Beverly Hunter has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A research scientist passionate for empowering learners with computer and communications technologies, Ms. Hunter has played an innovative role in the field of science education since establishing her career in 1964. Now engaged in community service and conservation of natural resources in Rappahannock County, Virginia, her career reflects the rapid changes in computer and communications technologies across all levels of education and training. Earlier in her career, Ms. Hunter came to prominence as a scientist for Boston College, lead scientist for BBN Corporation, program manager in the Science Education Directorate of the National Science Foundation, and senior staff scientist for the George Washington University Human Resources Research Organization. Her projects span applications of online networks, geographic information systems, simulations, databases, and programming. Other noteworthy roles in her career include computer programmer for the US Navy, systems engineer for IBM Corporation and director of instructional programming for the Human Resources Research Organization, and president of Targeted Learning Corporation. In recognition of her professional excellence, Ms. Hunter was the recipient of various research grants from the National Science Foundation between 1979 and 2003. She received the National Science Foundation Director's Award for Program Officer Excellence in 1992.

In addition, she was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Certified in systems engineering at IBM Corporation and in geographic information systems at George Mason University, Ms. Hunter prepared for her career by investing in her education. In 1963, she earned a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in philosophy and logic with distinction as a National Merit Scholar from the University of Pittsburgh. To apply her professional skills to natural resource conservation, Ms. Hunter is President of Rappahannock Friends and Lovers of Our Watersheds; a member of Old Rag Master Naturalists; a member of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute; and the Rappahannock League of Environmental Protection. Ms. Hunter has served as a consultant for the US Congress, US Office of Education, Bell Laboratories and Telenet Communications. She served on the Board of Directors for Apple Corporation's Education Foundation. She graduated from the Education for Ministry program of the University of the South School of Theology.

Ms. Hunter has authored and co-authored over 50 books, chapters, and articles, including "Learning Alternatives in US Education: Where Student and Computer Meet," "My Students Use Computers," "Guide to Learning Resources for Users of IBM Personal Computers," "Scholastic Life Science Data Bases," "Scholastic Literature Databases," and "Online Searching in the Curriculum." As she looks to the future, Ms. Hunter intends to continue in her community service in conservation and social justice. With Hal Hunter, she received a Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award from the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection.
