Recognized for four and a half decades of invaluable contributions to her field, Dr. Bekendam parlays her extensive knowledge into her current role as an independent counselor, which she has held since 2009. She also uses her talents as an author, and has penned two novels, "The Prophet and Pharaoh," in 2011 and "A Spacious Place," in 2013, thus far. Previously, Dr. Bekendam served as the director and owner of the Creative Counseling Center from 1986 to 1999, and as executive director of the center from 1979 to 2000 and supervisor of intern training in marriage and family therapy from 1979 to 2001. Further, she garnered experience as the director for the American Friends Prison Program and as a Southern California representative for M-2. Dr. Bekendam prepared for her endeavors by earning a Bachelor of Arts in behavioral science from California State Polytechnic University and a Master of Arts in marriage and family counseling from Azusa Pacific University. She also obtained a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fielding Institute.
In order to keep abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Bekendam affiliates herself with the American Association of University Women and the American Psychological Association. Throughout her long-standing career, she has been awarded many times for her work in the industry. She earned the Women Helping Women Award through Soroptomists in 1975 and, a year later, she won the Achievement Award from California State Polytechnic University. She has also been included in Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women. Looking toward the future, Dr. Bekendam intends to experience the continued growth and success of her career.
