Frustrated Constituents Stage Mock Town Hall To Bring Congressman Lee Zeldin Out Of Hiding

Lee Zeldin constituents of New York's 1st congressional district hold people's town hall event in response to public forum shutdown.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY, March 03, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As elected officials across the country are meeting with concerned citizens, New York's 1st congressional district Representative Lee Zeldin has declined to follow suit. Frustrated by Lee Zeldin's refusal to hear constituent concerns and town hall meeting cancellation, local political education, and action organization, Project Free Knowledge will host a "People's Town Hall" this Saturday evening at the Port Jefferson Performing Arts Center.

Representation of the congressman will be dramatized, but audience questions and subsequent dialogue will be unscripted and open to the public. The highly publicized voter interest in these events, evidenced by large turnouts nationwide, has called attention to the District 1 congressman's relative unavailability.

"When a Congressman does not take his job seriously," says local Free Knowledge member Peter Magistrale, "we should not take him seriously, so we are resorting to political comedy. We do not need Lee for democracy."

In the satirical event, the character of Lee Zeldin will highlight the growing divide between the congressman and his constituents, reading from his actual public statements, while the People's Candidate will represent the group's vision of a politician who would better serve democracy and the community's needs. The purpose of the event is to educate and empower the public and to promote a government that is accountable and person-based.

In a private meeting last week, Project Free Knowledge members relayed concerns to Rep. Zeldin at his Riverhead office. Group leaders invited Rep. Zeldin to attend the March 4 town hall, but his office responded that the public event "is not beneficial to anyone."

Citing Rep. Zeldin's rebuff of their and other's invitation, the group maintains that the "People's Town Hall" will offer more substantial discussion about constituent concerns than any of the congressman's attempted substitutes.

Project Free Knowledge is a nonpartisan, member funded organization that aims to combat the alienation of the people from the government by promoting public education and demanding government transparency. For more information, visit http://www.projectfreeknowledge.com.
