Dr. Eric Shooter Revered for Accomplishments in Neurobiology

Dr. Shooter characterized a nerve growth factor that assists in the regrowth of lost or damaged nerve cells



    PORTOLA VALLEY, CA, March 28, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Eric Shooter has been included in Marquis Who's Who. A neurobiology professor and consultant, Dr. Shooter has devoted his life to teaching and practicing science. The recipient of a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, a Ph.D., a Sc.D. from Cambridge University and a DSc from the University of London, he began his career as a senior biochemistry scientist with the Brewing Industry Research Foundation. Dr. Shooter's first foray into teaching came later, as a biochemistry lecturer at University College London. He then spent the next 50-plus years at Stanford University as an associate professor of genetics, a professor of genetics and of biochemistry, chairman of the neurobiology department, a professor of neurobiology, and chairman of the neuroscience Ph.D. program. He retired in 2004 after five decades of educating multiple classes of future scientists.

Dr. Shooter's neurobiology expertise has taken him to many places over the years for teaching and research opportunities and programs. He participated in the Associate Neuroscience Research Program in New York City from 1979 to 1989, taught at the International School of Neuroscience in Italy from 1987 to 1993, acted as a senior consultant for Markey Charitable Trust in Florida from 1985 to 1997, and co-founded Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in upstate New York, where he was on the board of directors from 1988 to 2014. He was also a fellow the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Shooter was the associate editor of a book series on neuroscience from 1984 to 2001 and contributed over 100 papers to a number of professional journals prior to his retirement. His distinction in his field was recognized by his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.

In light of Dr. Shooter's accomplishments, he has been featured in the 46th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 4th through 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, the 1st through 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, the 8th through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, the 28th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the West, and the 23rd through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
