Steps to Take After Mycotoxin Exposure is Confirmed

It is also strongly recommended that people confirmed to have mycotoxin contamination not return to the environment where exposure occurred unless mitigation work has taken place.

CARROLLTON, TX, June 11, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- RealTime Laboratories' director talks about next steps after mycotoxin exposure is confirmed.

Mycotoxins are poisons created and released by molds and fungi. While many mycotoxins are largely harmless to humans, this is not always the case. Some mycotoxins, such as the type associated with black mold, can create serious health concerns when humans are contaminated through ingestion, inhalation or skin contact. If a laboratory test has confirmed the presence of harmful mycotoxins in the body, there are several steps affected individuals will want to take to safeguard their health and help eliminate concerns about repeat exposure.

"The exact protocol to follow will depend on the mycotoxin or mycotoxins revealed in a panel test," says Dr. Dennis Hooper, laboratory director at RealTime Laboratories. "One of the first priorities after confirmation, however, should be to discuss results with a healthcare provide to determine what, if any, mitigating treatments may be necessary. Depending on the exposure involved, certain treatments, such as antifungals, antioxidants, Glutathione and FIR Sauna may be recommended."

It is also strongly recommended that people confirmed to have mycotoxin contamination not return to the environment where exposure occurred unless mitigation work has taken place. Depending on the environment and the contamination involved, mold testing called Environmental Relative Moldiness Index may be an important consideration. An ERMI test is designed to determine the type and number of mold spores found in samples taken from a building's interior. These results can indicate the need for decontamination by an environmental inspector. ERMI tests may also be useful for getting landlords or employers to recognize contaminated environments.

"Depending on the toxins involved, mycotoxin exposure can promote the development of serious health conditions," says Dr. Hooper. "That makes reviewing results with a healthcare provider critical. Making sure to avoid repeat exposure is also vital for safeguarding health over the long run."

RealTime Labs (RTL) is the only clinical laboratory certified by CAP and CLIA to perform mycotoxin testing on humans. The test uses human urine and we perform an ELISA test to determine the presence or absence of 15 of the most toxic mycotoxins. The tests are generally ordered and given to the patient during an office visit. To date, more than 100,000 tests have been performed and our provider base is over 2000 physicians.
