It is truly heartwarming to look on Dr. Smith's career in cardiology, physiology and education as one of the most stellar in medical research.

CALGARY, AB, June 29, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Dr. Eldon Smith a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Smith celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

It is truly heartwarming to look on Dr. Smith's career in cardiology, physiology and education as one of the most stellar in medical research, and one that shines on the ability of Canadians to cooperate for the common good. Not only has Dr. Smith pioneered scientific research and education, he was instrumental in the '80s for developing the cardiology program at the University of Calgary and Southern Alberta. His accomplishments have been broadly recognized, and he was decorated as an officer of the Order of Canada, an honor with authority stemming from Queen Elizabeth II.

Dr. Smith earned a medical degree cum laude from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, in 1967. He trained in both the U.S. and U.K. before joining the faculty of his alma mater as an assistant professor, working his way toward associate professor in medicine and physiology. In 1980, he became the chief of the cardiology division at the University of Calgary, serving also as professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics. He would go on to serve as chair of the department of medicine in 1985 and as dean of the faculty of medicine in 1992 before accepting the distinguished role of professor emeritus in 2004.

During his tenure, Dr. Smith has spearheaded many efforts in cardiovascular health. He was instrumental in the creation of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, which integrates research, education and clinical care through a collaborative and multi-disciplinary program. The institute provides resources for every level of medical professional down to educating the patients themselves. Libin is composed of 175 medical professionals serving around two million people in the Alberta area.

This type of collaborative project would become a hallmark of Dr. Smith's cardiology, and in 2009, his team proposed a nation-wide program called the Canadian Heart Health Strategy and Action Plan (CHHS-AP). As Dr. Smith said, "As a nation we already have a strategy for cancer, diabetes, and lung disease, but until now, did not have a comprehensive strategy for the number one killer and public health threat in the country: heart disease and stroke." CHHS-AP provided recommendations for governments and the private sector to engage Canadians in every aspect of society, with the end goal of prolonging lives and improving health across the board.

As a celebrated cardiologist, Dr. Smith has been involved with a number of societies and served on the boards of publicly traded companies such as Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, Aston Hill Financial, and Resverlogix Corporation. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the International Academy of Cardiovascular Science, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Heart Association, and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. Dr. Smith was appointed editor-in-chief for the Canadian Journal of Cardiology in 1997 and served dutifully until 2010. He was a member of the Alberta Health Services Board and a trustee of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research from 2000 to 2007. From 2002 to 2007, he served on the Premier's Advisory Council on Health. Dr. Smith also founded the Peter Lougheed Medical Research Foundation, and served on its board of directors until 2007.

In recognition of his hard work and dedication, Dr. Smith has been honored with multiple awards, including the Order of Canada, the Medal for Distinguished Service from the Alberta Medical Association, and the Diamond Jubilee Medal, one of 60,000 commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the ascension of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne of Canada. The medal was created in 2012 to honor significant contributions or achievements made by Canadians of every sector. Dr. Smith has published over 250 papers and books, and was included in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World. In 2014 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from Dalhousie University. He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of Calgary.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Smith has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
