Mr. Lewis is a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent-rated private practice attorney and occasional lecturer on police misconduct litigation and employment discrimination. He started his private practice in 1978, and is most proud of being one of two lawyers who obtained a consent order against the State of Mississippi for civil rights discrimination and spying in the '60s on behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations and individuals. Mr. Lewis also serves on the institutional review board of the University of Mississippi, and has served as a Criminal Justice ACT (CJA) criminal defense training coordinator for the Northern Judicial District of Mississippi, as well as the representative for the Northern Judicial District of Mississippi to the National Conference of CJA attorneys.
Mr. Lewis was born in 1943 to George Weber Lewis and Marianne Parsons Lewis. He started his career as a French instructor, then journalist and blacksmith, but was quickly drawn to the legal profession in the ardent desire to become a better advocate for civil rights. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where he earned an AB in 1965, and went on to Harvard University to earn an MAT in French four years later. In 1978, Mr. Lewis' resolve to pursue law bore fruit, and he earned a JD from the University of Mississippi, launching his private practice. He has been in the field for 39 years and has served as an associate of Hill, Lewis, & Bell, as well as Holcomb, Dunbar, Connell, Chaffin & Willard.
For the past several years he has been a solo practitioner. Mr. Lewis served on the board of directors of the Mississippi Civil Liberties Union in the late '80s. He is also a past member of the Lafayette County Democratic Executive Committee, and the Mississippi Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. Mr. Lewis belongs to the Lafayette County Bar Association, and the Mississippi Bar Association. For his services in the pursuit of justice, Mr. Lewis was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in American Law, five volumes of Who's Who in America from 2000 to 2004, and the 1997 to 1998 volume of Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He has five children: Joshua Byron, Kristopher Byron, Katherine Byron Lewis, Jennifer Pierce, Alex Owens, and Annalise N. Lewis.
