At the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Dr. Muglia serves as co-director of the Perinatal Institute, director of the Center for Prevention of Preterm Birth, and most recently, A. Graeme Mitchell Chair and director of the division of Human Genetics. His roles are the culmination of 29 years as a children's physician, with achievements in research including the elucidation of molecular pathways during stress and the identification of genes involved in the control of timing for birth. In 1984, Dr. Muglia married Lisa Kunnath, and they had two children of their own, Sarah and Peter.
Born in Detroit to Dominic and Violet Muglia in 1959, Dr. Muglia studied for a Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan before earning both an MD and a PhD at the University of Chicago. He served a residency in the pediatrics department of the Children's Hospital of Boston, and was accepted there on a pediatrics endocrinology fellowship. Dr. Muglia taught at Washington University for many years, and was named director of the center for preterm research from 2006 to 2007. He won the Excellence in Mentoring Award at Washington University on seven occasions. At the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Muglia serves as co-director of the Perinatal Institute as well as director of prevention of preterm birth.
Dr. Muglia has contributed to many societies, including the advisory board of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund of Research Triangle Park North Carolina, which also supported him with a Career Development Award in the Biomedical Sciences earlier in his career. He is affiliated with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Society for Pediatric Research, which presented him with the 1999 Young Investigator Award. He is an active member of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, Endocrine Society, Perinatal Research Society, and Association of American Physicians.
Furthermore, Dr. Muglia has served as chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health. He has written over 225 publications focused on management of maternal stress, inflammation, and birth timing.
