A long time accomplished listee in Who's Who in American Art including the feature in Who's Who in the East in 1993, Joanne Gigliotti celebrates many years' experience in her professional field, and has been noted for achievements in the visual arts. She's received national awards for her artwork, many exhibition opportunities, many of which were produced as national traveling exhibits. She's an experienced, lecturer, teacher, and has demonstrated the art of batik, her chosen method of painting. Ms Gigliotti has shown leadership in art, arts administration, and outstanding performance in teaching. In addition, her experience in the visual arts is broad and deep. It includes managing classes or programs, funding projects, curating, acting as juror, alone or on a team, working in a gallery, selling art, representing artists, and mentoring young artists. Joanne Gigliotti, involved in the visual arts all her life, is a fine artist who is known for her work in the art of batik. In 2011 she won 1st Place in the first American Batik Design Competition, which was produced by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, sponsored by the Indonesian government and many international corporate sponsors. This was a major award, it came with prize money, a trip to the award ceremony and classes in CA, and a trip to Indonesia with embassy personnel in 2012, where her work was extensively exhibited and publicized. She was invited to work as the coordinator of the second American Batik Design Competition 2013/14, and later she helped teach a Batik class for teachers at the Embassy. In 2016 she represented the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, presenting her work, demonstrating the process, with additional displays, and ongoing slide shows for the World Bank and IMF Summer Meeting in the Atrium. That year she was also a Featured Speaker, producing a demonstration with an overflow crowd, at the Chicago Hilton Hotel, for the Remarkable Indonesia Fair. In 2014 she represented Indonesia by demonstrating Batik, their primary art form, for ten ASEAN countries at USABC, 30th Anniversary Gala Event, Four Seasons Hotel, DC. 2013. The Textile Museum had her present her "Winning Entry of First American Batik Design Competition" for their Symposium in Celebration of World Batik Day.
From her time attending the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh Saturday classes, through graduating in Painting Design and Sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University, Ms. Gigliotti worked on her own art, exhibited her work widely, promoted other artists, and taught art in a variety of media and venues. During her time in graduate school in the field of Art Education, she taught a new group of teachers-to-be; she also developed and managed a multi-arts event, the Elizabethan Festival, and educational video, for the local school systems through The Pennsylvania State University. She was then tapped to be the Director of the HUB (Hetzel Union Building) Arts and Crafts Centre (sic.), where she had previously taught.
To accomplish one of her lifetime goals of promoting other artists, as well as supporting collectors, Ms. Gigliotti formalized this effort by founding The Fine Arts Connection, a national organization to advance the Arts. She had experience working in an established art and framing gallery, but this endeavor also included photography of art, promotion, and shipping with all the accompanying administration and funding. When the company moved to DC, it kept the same motives, but became a consulting firm. During this time of independent consulting, she attended in museum classes at George Washington University, and taught a variety of classes at American University, the Army/Airman's Home, and Smithsonian's Studio Arts Department.
After teaching batik, design, and a series of hands on art classes, Studio Arts Department, she developed and taught a series of classes on "marketing your art" for them. Ms. Gigliotti was then named the director of the Studio Arts Department of the Smithsonian Associates. This position also included directing the Discover Graphics Program which worked with gifted high school students, and produced a museum exhibition yearly. She and her team were responsible for running the photography studio as well as a fully equipped printmaking studio, and producing hundreds of Studio Arts Classes, and many seminars with important artists, such as Jacob Laurence. Large events included a nine day prize winning seminar, "Infinite Illusions, The World of Electronically Created Imagery" were on computers and the arts.
While working at The Smithsonian Institution, she was an active participant in advocacy work as the Chair of the Smithsonian's Women's Council, member of the Latino Working Committee, and the newly formed group of representatives from each advocacy organizations.
