Kentucky Attorney Urges Caution During 100 Deadly Days

Billy Johnson of the Billy Johnson Law Firm in Pikeville, Ky., says highways are especially dangerous during summer months.

Teenagers are really at the worst risk, because they don't have the experience to handle potentially dangerous situations, and they don't understand how dangerous it is to be distracted while driving.

PIKEVILLE, KY, July 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Billy Johnson, founder of the Billy Johnson Law Firm in Pikeville, Ky., cautions Kentucky drivers to be especially careful on the road between now and Labor Day, during the period of time known as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) has labeled the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day the 100 Deadliest Days of summer because of the amount of traffic on the road and the subsequent number of accidents. With the possible exception of the winter holidays, this stretch of summer represents the busiest time of year on the roads and brings an exponential jump in the number of accidents.

This period is especially dangerous for teens, as AAA reports that accidents involving teenaged drivers increase by more than 15 percent during this time. In 2016, there were more than 1,600 fatalities in accidents involving teen drivers over the summer.

"Teenagers are really at the worst risk," Billy Johnson said, "because they don't have the experience to handle potentially dangerous situations, and they don't understand how dangerous it is to be distracted while driving, especially with more cars on the road during the 100 Deadliest Days."

In 2014, there were 53,500 accidents, 14,000 injuries and 169 fatalities in Kentucky due to distracted driving, according to the Kentucky Department of Transportation. "We all know how attached teenagers are to their smart phones and how tempted they are to use them even when behind the wheel, for talking, texting and engaging with social media. But another thing that contributes to distracted driving is interacting with passengers in the car, and a lot of kids don't realize how that takes the driver's attention away from the road and increases the chance of accidents. With young people out of school, out and about in the car, that's a real danger."

The Billy Johnson Law Firm urges teens to monitor each other's driving behavior: If riding with a friend who is texting, speak up and let them know that what they are doing is dangerous and unnecessary. They also caution parents to lead by example: Don't allow yourself to become distracted by phones, food, navigation instruments, or other things that take your attention off the task of driving safely.

The attorneys and staff at The Billy Johnson Law Firm encourage us all to be more mindful of our driving habits and make this year's 100 Deadliest Days among Kentucky's safest 100 days.
