In addition to teaching at NYU, Dr. Silverman cooperatively directed the biography seminar at the university from 1964 to 2001, and was awarded numerous prizes for his contributions to literature. Dr. Silverman's latest book was published in 2010, titled "Begin Again: A Biography of John Cage."
A New York City native, Dr. Silverman was born in 1936 to Gustave and Bessie Silverman. He matriculated at Columbia University and earned a bachelor's degree in 1956, followed by a master's degree in 1958. Dr. Silverman taught briefly at the University of Wyoming before becoming a preceptor in English at Columbia University. He joined NYU in the '60s, and began to produce the biographical volumes that would become Dr. Silverman's claim to fame. He began with "Timothy Dwight" in 1969, documenting the 18th century Yale College president, and published "A Cultural History of the American Revolution" in 1976.
In 1984, Dr. Silverman published his prize-winning biography of the American Puritan Cotton Mather, a book that was celebrated for accurately depicting a complex and controversial man. He followed it with "Edgar A. Poe: Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance" in 1991 and "Houdini!!! The Career of Ehrich Weiss" (sic) in 1996, continuing a series of celebrated Americans. In 2003, he wrote "Lightning Man: The Accursed Life of Samuel F.B. Morse," and in 2010, he elucidated the life of celebrated musician, inventor, composer, poet, and amateur mycologist John Cage. Dr. Silverman is also the editor of the "Colonial American Poetry" anthology and compiled the "Selected Letters of Cotton Mather" in 1976. He is a former member of the editorial board of Early American Literature, William and Mary Quarterly, and American Literature.
Dr. Silverman is a noted member of the Society of American Magicians, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Society of American Historians, the American Antiquarian Society, the Authors Guild, and the Mystery Writers of America, which awarded him the 1992 Edgar Allan Poe Award. He is the recipient of the 1985 Bancroft Prize in American History as well as the 1972 to 1974 Bicentennial Award from the National Endowment of the Humanities. Dr. Silverman has received grants from the American Philosophical Society and the American Council of Learned Societies, and served with the advisory council of the Institute of Early American History and Culture.
From 1989 to 1990, Dr. Silverman was a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. For his literary achievements and services to American history, Dr. Silverman was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, two volumes of Who's Who in American Education, two volumes of Who's Who in the World, and the 1991 student version of Who's Who in America. Dr. Silverman has two children, Willa Zahava and Ethan Leigh. His long-time partner is Jane Mallison.
