Daphne Janice Fairbairn Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Fairbairn is a Professor Emerita of the University of California, Riverside, as well as a past President of the Society for the Study of Evolution. She dedicated many years to the University of California and to Concordia University in Montreal pursuing the study of organismal biology, population ecology, population genetics, and behavioral ecology. In particular Dr. Fairbairn is known for her work on sexual differences and dispersal strategies in animals.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario to Gordon Fairbairn and Mary Rioux in 1949, Dr. Fairbairn attended nearby Carleton University and earned a B.Sc. with Honors in 1971, receiving the University Medal in Science. She then went to graduate school at the University of British Columbia on a Science and Engineering Scholarship, receiving her PhD in Zoology in 1976. She was granted a postdoctoral research fellowship by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to continue her work at U.B.C., before briefly becoming an Assistant Professor of Zoology at the University of Alberta, and then accepting a post as Research Scientist and Section Head of Biochemical Systematics for Fisheries and Oceans Canada in St. John's, Newfoundland.

In 1982, she was welcomed by Concordia University and taught there as a professor of biology until 2001, when she joined the University of California. In 2016, she accepted the venerable position of professor emeritus.

Beginning in the 1970's, Dr. Fairbairn has been a noted contributor to scientific research journals, notably serving as Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Evolution", and Editor of the "Journal of Evolutionary Biology". Her popular articles have also appeared in the BBC Focus magazine, Huffington Post Science, as well as the Wall Street Journal. She has also authored "Odd Couples. Extraordinary Differences Between the Sexes in the Animal Kingdom" from Princeton University Press, and co-edited two books on sexual dimorphisms and evolutionary ecology. Dr. Fairbairn is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Society of Naturalists, the European Society for Evolutionary Biology, and the Society for the Study of Evolution.

For a lifetime of dedication to the biological sciences, Dr. Fairbairn was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and two volumes of Who's Who of American Women from 2008 to 2011. She has two children, and enjoys hiking, backpacking, skiing, and canoeing.
