In the mid-1940s, she began as an English teacher for Cleveland Elementary Schools. Soon after, she began lending her expertise to the city's secondary schools as well. Over the next 40 years, she served as assistant and associate professor, professor, president, founder and dean for institutions such as Trinity College, the D.C. Teachers College, the University of Maryland, and The Open University of America.

A graduate of Notre Dame College, Western Reserve University, Ohio State University and California National Open University, Dr. Rodgers holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, a PhD and an EdD. Her professional affiliations include the U.S. Distance Learning Association, the American Educational Research Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the American Academy of Poets.

Throughout her lengthy career, Dr. Rodgers has lent her expertise to a number of creative works. In the mid-1970s, she authored "A Short Course in English Composition," and over many decades, she has written such works as "Modes and Models: Four Lessons for Young Writers," "Poet and Pedagogue in Moscow and Leningrad: A Travel Report," "Ten Lectures in Literary Production," and the third edition of "Nicola Columbro: A Brief Biography." Notably, she has been recognized many times for her outstanding work in the field, with features in publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in American Education.
