Due to his love of blending humanistic elements with science, Dr. Conture became involved in speech-language pathology as a way to make a difference in the lives of students. In the early 1970s, after first completing a Bachelor's degree at Emerson College and a Master's degree at Northwestern University, he began working as a professor for the department of hearing and speech science at Syracuse University. During this time, Dr. Conture was simultaneously working toward his PhD at the University of Iowa, which he completed in 1972.

During his years teaching at the university level, he also spent time as a visiting researcher at Nijmegen Institute of Cognition and Information at Radboud University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands from 1994 to 1995 and as a consultant for Tulane University. He also did consulting work in Bulgaria, a professional highlight for him. Among several institutions, he has consulted for Louisiana State University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Texas at Austin.

From 2011 to 2016, Dr. Conture served as a Fulbright senior specialist. More recently, he began contributing to Henry Stuart Talks (HS TALKS), which is the British equivalent of TED Talks.

Kleffner Clinical Career Award from the American Speech and Hearing Foundation, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Iowa's speech-language pathology and audiology department, in addition to several research grants from the National Institute Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. Throughout his career, he has contributed several articles to professional journals and has since been included in several editions of Who's Who in America.

Volunteering his time with the Stuttering Foundation of America since 1982, Dr. Conture also remains active with the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association and the American Speech and Hearing Foundation. He has also been a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and enjoys several hobbies, such as travelling, hiking, windsurfing, cooking, reading, and writing.
