Supported by more than 45 years of professional experience, Dr. David Webb currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Synbal, Inc., an Active Genetics Platform Company that is commercializing a novel gene drive technology pioneered at UCSD. The platform can be applied across the entire field of biology, including agriculture, pest control, veterinary medicine, and human therapeutics (particularly cancer and regenerative medicine).
Throughout his career, Dr. Webb has worked to strengthen ties between academic and professional leaders in his field by holding university and research institute positions in addition to his executive roles. While leading research and discovery efforts at a number of first-rate biopharmaceutical companies, he has also served as an associate member of the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, adjunct or consulting professor at New York Medical College, City University of New York, Columbia University, Stanford University, and the Scripps Research Institute. By helping to bridge the gap between the campus and the office, Dr. Webb has been instrumental in bringing together experts in his field who have gone on to produce technologies and drugs that address a wide variety of health conditions.
Over the years, Dr. Webb has lent his breadth of knowledge to a number of prestigious companies, including Syntex, Inc., Cadus Pharmaceutical Corporation, OSI Pharmaceuticals, Syrrx, and Celgene San Diego. While serving in research leadership roles with these organizations, he successfully guided his teams through the clinical development of a variety of drugs that addressed such afflictions as cancer, inflammation/autoimmunity, asthma, diabetes, and transplant rejection.
Volunteer and community leadership has also been a hallmark of Dr. Webb's career. He is a past Chairman of the Board of BIOCOM (an experienced leadership group with more than 900 members that advocates for California's life science sector); a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of CONNECT (a San Diego organization that aims to create great innovation companies by helping entrepreneurs access the resources they need to thrive); and a current member of the Board of Directors of the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Webb has also been very active in the San Diego chapter of the American Cancer Society, having served as chair and co-chair of a number of their outreach efforts. He received a Rising Star Award from the American Cancer Society in 2006.
In addition to having been featured himself in a plethora of academic and professional journals, Dr. Webb has served on the editorial boards of a variety of noteworthy publications, including the Journal of Immunology, Cellular Immunology, and Biochemical Pharmacology, just to name a few.
Dr. Webb received a distinguished alumnus career achievement award (1988) from his undergraduate university, California State University Fullerton, and he obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Rutgers University. A seasoned professional with decades of experience, Dr. Webb has been noted many times for his work in the fields of biology and immunology, including two features in Who's Who in the West.
