Dr. Adams, a retired insurance executive from Williston, Florida, boasts an extensive background in his field, one that enabled him to successfully climb the corporate ladder year after year. In 1958, after completing a BSBA at the University of Florida, he became an agent with Pan Am Insurance Company. Taking the first steps to further his career, he then worked for Guy B. Odum & Company for more than 20 years, earning the titles of vice president, executive vice president, and president. Later spending 13 years as president for Jay Adams & Associates, Inc. in Daytona Beach, followed by another 13 years with Hilb Rogal & Hamilton Company in roles that led to executive vice president, COO, and executive vice president of operations, he began his last leadership role in 1996 as the executive vice president and member of the leadership council for Brown & Brown Inc. until 2006.
Serving on countless board of directors, executive committees, and chairman roles involving corporations, non-profits, and universities, to name a few, Dr. Adams has been actively involved in his community his entire career. One of the highlights of his time spent was as chairman of the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers. During this period (1997-1998) he negotiated the merger of the Council with the National Association of Brokers which included in its membership Marsh & McClenen, Frank B. Hall and a number of the other largest insurance brokerage firms that were national and operated across the country. Dr. Adams served as President of the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce in Daytona Beach, President of the Volusia County Insurance Association and a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents and as Chairman of the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers in 1997 and 1998. He was actively involved with his local Rotary.
Dr. Adams received an honorary degree in humane letters from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University when he retired as a Trustee and was named a Trustee Emeritus. He was the recipient of a number of other awards during his career, including several community service awards for his involvement in establishing the John C. Adams Community Service Award in 1990 through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, had the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Board of Trustees Community Leadership Award named in his honor, and was named to the Embry-Riddle Athletic Hall of Fame by the Athletic Association in 2015 for his support and involvement with the university's athletic program. He has been included in more than 20 editions of Who's Who for his contributions.
