Photojournalist Suzanne Vlamis Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

About Suzanne Vlamis
Suzanne Vlamis is currently the Owner/Director of www.suzannevlamis.com, an environmental photography company, and a science and health researcher to Dr. Joy C. Zagoren, PhD.

She retired from The Associated Press in 2009 as Special Projects Editor AP Photo Archives having worked with them since 1973 as the first full-time female staff photographer, then in 1985 as the AP News Features Supervising Photo Editor, and then finally in 1998 to 2009 as Special Projects Editor AP Photo Archives. She also spent time as a freelance photographer, editorial assistant to Victor Riesel, copy assistant to the features editor at Brides Magazine, and as a production assistant on "Cable Doctor" and "Speak Out."

Her work has appeared in the New York Daily News, Fortune Magazine, MD Magazine, USIA, and the Jersey City Journal, where she served a stint as art reviewer. Through The Associated Press, she is a published photographer for the presidential campaigns and inaugurations of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, She covered the 1976 and 1984 Summer Olympics, the Super Bowl, the United Nations, Broadway, sports, fashion, the art and culture scene, the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, the Centennial Restoration of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the building of Equitable Tower. She has been documenting endangered species, indigenous cultures and landscapes in Africa, Antarctica, Australia and Alaska since 2008.

She recently published her first book, "Africa Endangered" 2017. Each special limited edition is signed and numbered. The 11 X 13 photography book contains 90 pages and 50 color photographs that cover her journeys to Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Rwanda and Zanzibar. Her goal in producing the book is to focus appreciation, awareness and advocacy on Africa's endangered species, indigenous cultures and natural habitats. She plans to publish "Antarctica Endangered" next.

Ms. Vlamis has exhibited her photography in several one-woman shows and group photography shows. She served as photographer for the 2009 exhibit, "Welfare Island - A Spirit of Place Past," held by The Roosevelt Island Historical Association and the "9/11 Commemorative Photo Exhibition" held at the Gallery of Graphic Arts and Morning Calm Gallery in 2001. She is also a credited photographer for "The Sports 100: The 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century" (1999), "The Olympics at 100: A Celebration in Pictures" (1995), "Jazz Musicians" (1991), "Restoring Lady Liberty" (1986), "Moments In Time: 50 Years of Associated Press News Photos" (1985), "One Day In Our World, Moments In Time: 60 Years of Associated Press News Photos" (1985), "Welfare Island and Other Photographs," Long Island University (1972) and "American Photographers." Ms. Vlamis was photo editor of "John Wayne: A Tribute" in 1979 and "Bing Crosby."

In addition to her status as a Lifetime Achiever, Ms. Vlamis received The Associated Press Managing Editor Award for Top Feature Photography for her work on the Statue of Liberty historic restoration in 1984, 1st Prize, Feature Story from the New York Press Photographers Association in 1979, and the Photographers Sports Award, World Press, from the National Press Photographers Association in 1975. Furthermore, Ms. Vlamis has been a featured listee in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.

She has served as a Board Member of The American Friends of Sarah Herzog Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel, since 2002, having previously served as Vice President from 2002-2013. Closer to home, Ms. Vlamis has been a member of the Upper East Side Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) since 2002, and served as Vice President of the 79th St. Neighborhood Association's Zoning Committee from 2002-2003. She is an associate of the American Film Institute and maintains active membership with the New York Press Photographers Association, Ocean Conservancy, Cousteau Society, World Wildlife Fund, National Audubon Society, George Eastman House, New York City Collector's Club, Sierra Club, Jane Goodall Institute, African Wildlife Foundation, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and National Geographic Society.

She holds a BA in English with a minor in sociology from Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY (1966).

She also completed coursework at The School of Visual Arts as well as The New School where she studied with photojournalists Ken Heyman and Josef Breitenbach. In 1989, she earned a Certificate in Filmmaking from New York University.
