Sarah Stuart Knox, PhD, F.A.C.E., Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

A professor of epidemiology at West Virginia University School of Medicine and currently the School of Public Health, since 2008, Dr. Knox originally entered her field due to a strong interest in mind/body interactions. Her experience over the years, which includes research on the psychophysiology of cardiovascular diseases, gene / environment interactions, and currently, biophysics and cancer; evolved into a systems biology research approach to the study of chronic diseases. She began her career in Stockholm, Sweden in 1981, as a research psychophysiologist working at the Karolinska Institute for Environmental Medicine and The National Institute for Psychosocial Factors and Health. Her career continued to progress in Stockholm from research associate to principal investigator, and finally to associate professor at the University of Stockholm.

During the mid-1980s, Dr. Knox also directed a research group at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm investigating physical consequences of the working environment in Swedish twins. In 1987, she accepted a position at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit where she spent four years as an associate professor of psychiatry, followed by another 12 years at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, MD. as a member of the Behavioral Medicine Scientific Research Group. During that time, she directed a U.S.-Sweden collaboration on mechanisms of cardiovascular disease in women. She subsequently spent five years at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) as a senior scientist and co-project officer for their National Children's Study. In 2008, she accepted her current position at West Virginia University, where she investigates gene / environment interactions and biophysical signaling in cancer.

In 1985, Dr. Knox was a research consultant for the World Health Organization in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia. She has also chaired multiple national and international workshops and symposia, including a workshop on gender and heart disease for NATO in Hungary in 2000. She lectures regularly at national and international scientific meetings, and has served on the editorial board of scientific journals such as Molecular Psychiatry, Frontiers in Computational Physiology and Medicine, the Journal of Clinical & Experimental Oncology, and AIMS Molecular Science. She has contributed many articles to professional journals and has over 2000 scientific citations. She has also written a book, "Science, God and the Nature of Reality". Dr. Knox also teaches in the WVU graduate Schools of Medicine and Public Health, including courses in systems biology and epigenetics, epidemiology, cancer cell biology, and gene / environment interactions.

Dr. Knox received a BA from the University of New Hampshire, and subsequently graduated with an MS and PhD from Stockholm University in Sweden, in 1981. While in Sweden, Dr. Knox received multiple grants from the Swedish Work Environment Fund, spanning from 1981 to 1986. She also became a licensed psychologist. She has since received many awards, including several National Institutes of Health Awards of Merit, (2005, 2006, 2007); an NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research Directors Award (2007); and an NICHD Leadership Excellence Award (2008). The mother of one, Dr. Knox has been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women for her work.
