Richard Allen Sheaffer Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Sheaffer has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the engineering industry

SAN MARCOS, CA, August 24, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Richard Allen Sheaffer a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Mr. Sheaffer is recognized for his many years' experience in his professional field, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Sheaffer has devoted the last 43 years to a successful career as an electrical engineer in the electric utility industry, starting at Southern California Edison Company (SCE) and recently retiring from the San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E). Since Mr. Sheaffer's retirement from SDG&E, he is currently working on a novel in the science fiction genre. He has also branched into the form of modern art known as abstract expressionism, completing his first work on a large-format (4x6-foot) canvas.

When Mr. Sheaffer was about 9 years old, he received an electric set that piqued his lifelong interest in the field. He was born in Bronxville, New York, and while attending The Pennsylvania State University, he worked in a variety of fields and institutions, including the United States Office of Civil Defense. In 1972, he received a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, and shortly thereafter joined SCE in Rosemead, where he worked until 1990, interrupted by a brief period as an electrical engineer with Harris Corporation's controls division in Melbourne, Florida.

Mr. Sheaffer helped develop energy control center software for Harris, while at SCE he worked in the areas of transmission planning, substation engineering, electric grid operations and other areas of the company. In 1975, while still working for SCE, Mr. Sheaffer received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. Many highlights of his career occurred while at SCE, including the 1982 Disturbance Study of the west-wide power outage and the 1984 West-of-the-River Operating Study, each of which resulted in significant changes to improved economics and reliability of the electric power grid of the western states, and documenting Mr. Sheaffer's innovations in diagnosing and solving power supply challenges in California during those years.

In 1990, Mr. Sheaffer accepted part-time consultation work with SDG&E, and in 1991, they welcomed him as a senior transmission planner. To better prepare for management roles, he attended Pepperdine University to earn an MBA degree in 1996. From 2000 to 2007, he worked to represent the interests of SDG&E and its ratepayers in regard to decommissioning the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) located on the southern California coast very near to San Diego. He also represented SDG&E for the SONGS Units 2 and 3 Steam Generator Replacement Project from 2005 to 2007. Mr. Sheaffer continued from 2007 to 2012 as a principal engineer with the utility, and transitioned to managing the grid contract services section in 2012.

In addition to his other roles at SCE and SDG&E, Mr. Sheaffer has led a project nomogram study for the Pacific and Southwest transfer subcommittee of the Western Systems Coordinating Council. In 1997, he led a joint project to develop an increase in the path rating between Arizona and California to 7550 megawatts, again resulting in an improvement to the economics of operating the electric power grid while maintaining reliability. Mr. Sheaffer was recognized for his technical acumen with inclusion in the honor society Phi Eta Sigma, and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in the subgroup of the Power Engineering Society.

He was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and the 2004 to 2005 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Business.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Mr. Sheaffer has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
