WEST CHESTER, PA, September 05, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Thomas A. Gennarelli a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Gennarelli celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Gennarelli has held the esteemed position of professor emeritus with the Medical College of Wisconsin since 2011, the culmination of 42 years as a leader in the field of neurosurgery. He still serves as a clinical professor of neurosurgery at George Washington University. Dr. Gennarelli is known for developing research into diffuse axonal injury (DAI), which can cause coma and death in patients who have suffered trauma to the head.

Born in Berwyn, Illinois, to Thomas Gennarelli and Matilda Racich Gennarelli, Dr. Gennarelli earned an MD, cum laude, from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Maywood, Illinois. He joined Harvard University as a neurology fellow from 1969 to 1970 before becoming a surgeon and clinical associate with the U.S. Public Health Service in Bethesda, Maryland, associated with the National Institutes of Health.

Two years later, Dr. Gennarelli entered a four-year residency with the neurosurgery department in Georgetown University. In 1976, he became a professor of the subject in the University of Pennsylvania, where he served for 19 years. In 1995, Dr. Gennarelli went on to chair the Department of Neurosurgery at Allegheney University in Philadelphia, and in 1999, he joined the Medical College of Wisconsin to chair its neurosurgery department.

Dr. Gennarelli's research has pinpointed DAI as a form of diffuse brain injury, attributing it to microscopic damage in axons distributed throughout the brain. In presentations to several international scientific societies, Dr. Gennarelli associated the condition with a number of activities associated with concussion syndromes, including military and civilian sport activities, as well as automotive collisions. In addition to domestic societies, he has supported the International Neurotrauma Society in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as the International Council on Biomechanics Impact in Lyon, France, the Joint Section on Neurotrauma in Chicago and the International Committee on Injury Scaling in Des Plaines, Illinois.

In 1999, Dr. Gennarelli was recognized for his findings with an honorary Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the recipient of a Merit Award from the Association of Advancement in Automotive Medicine, and has been named to the listing of Best Doctors of America since 1987.

Dr. Gennarelli is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as the American Association for Surgery of Trauma. For his incredible discoveries in neuroscience, Dr. Gennarelli was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World, as well as two volumes of Who's Who in the Midwest, two volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 2011 to 2012 volume of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. He is the proud parent of Laura Michelle, Thomas Andrew, Gregory Scott, and Philip Alexander, alongside his wife, Alice Kay Doddridge.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Gennarelli has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
