KaKarala J. Rao Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

For more than 30 years, Dr. Rao has been a practicing endocrinologist and doctor of internal medicine. He served as a physician for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for most of his career, retiring in 2004. Having dedicated his life to helping others, he did not stay in retirement for long; he is currently contracted to work at 13 different facilities.

Dr. Rao is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force Reserves, serving from 1982 to 1989, and the National Guard, serving from 1989 to 1995. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1995 after serving as an active duty member during the Persian Gulf War and as a senior flight surgeon for the U.S. Air Force during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1991, he was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award by the U.S. Air Force for his service during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is a lifetime member of the National Association of VA Physicians and Dentists; the Ohio National Guard Association; the National Guard Association of the U.S.; the Reserve Officers Association of the U.S.; the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S.; the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.; and the Alliance of Air National Guard Flight Surgeons.

Dr. Rao graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from Gunter Medical College in Andhra Pradesh, India. He completed his residency in 1973 after serving at the VA Medical Center of Brooklyn and at the New York Methodist Hospital. After completing his residency, he received a fellowship in endocrinology from the Upstate VA Medical Center in New York, where he served for two years.

In 1992, he went back to school and obtained a Master of Science in community health from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He holds a Master's degree in Business and Bachelor of Science from Chengalpattu Medical College in Tamil, Nadu, India; he also has a Bachelor of Science from Sir C. R. Reddy College of Engineering in Andhra Pradesh, India. Dr. Rao has published eight papers and has conducted innovative research in endocrinology, further establishing his position as an outstanding member in his field.

In 2006, Dr. Rao was certified in Medical and Dental Acupuncture from the New York Medical College. He was also certified by the American Board of Disability Analysts in 2003, the American Board of Hospital Physicians in 2002, the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians in 1991, the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1985. In 1957, he received a combined certification in Ayurvedic and Western Medicine from the Government College of Integrated Medicine in India. He is licensed to practice as a physician in the states of Florida and New York.

Dr. Rao is a lifetime member of the American Medical Association, the Aerospace Medical Association, the Association of Physicians of India, the National Parks Conservation Association, the National Geographic Society, and the Sierra Club. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and fellow and charter member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is also a charter member of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and the Telugu Association of North America.

Dr. Rao was born in India on June 11, 1933. He thanks his father, Satyanarayana Kakarala, a reputable and successful lawyer in India, for the support and teachings that led him to become the accomplished person he is today. In Dr. Rao's spare time, he enjoys playing tennis and attending educational meetings.

Dr. Rao was commended as the Employee of the Month by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Chillicothe, Ohio. He was also honored by the Global Commission on International Migration by the Government of India. He has been featured in the International Who's Who of Professionals.
