Fondly remembered by generations of students, Mr. Eastman has taught social studies at the Beverly High School in Massachusetts since 1970, covering history, government, and economics. After being inspired by his own influential mentors, he wanted to give back as a teacher, and has contributed to academic research, educational administration, and charitable organizations. Mr. Eastman has been a tireless civic benefactor, and has won a plethora of awards for his contributions.
Mr. Eastman was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Harriett and Weston D. Eastman. He attended Drake University for a Bachelor's degree in social science, and began to teach with Beverly in 1970. Concurrently, he served as a track and field coach for Springfield College and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell through 1981. During his years of coaching Mr. Eastman coached 8 Division 2 NCAA Track and Field All-Americans and published a number of articles in various coaching journals including "Scholastic Coach" and "Track Technique." Mr. Eastman served as a Good Will Ambassador for the United States Department of State coaching summers in Mexico from 1980-1983.
While at Springfield, Mr. Eastman continued to study education, and earned a Master's degree in 1976. He was certified in advanced graduate administration one year later. Mr. Eastman has been featured in a number of books including "I Am A Teacher: A Salute to America's Teachers," "The American Resting Place: Four Hundred Years of History Through Our Cemeteries and Burial Grounds" and in magazines including Boston Magazine, Teaching Tolerance and Local History Magazine.
When outside his classroom, Mr. Eastman has been a prolific member of his community, and is well known as the founder of the W. Dean Eastman Charitable Foundation and the chief benefactor of the W. Dean Eastman New England Collection at the Drake University Library. He applied his administration skills with the educational steering committee of the Massachusetts Civil Liberties Union, and served with the PBS Teaching Advisory Board as well as the Committee for the Administration of Adams Family Papers. He is the contributor of the Nathan Dane biography in the Yale Biographical Dictionary of American Law. He has co-authored a number of scholarly peer reviewed articles in academic journals such as "The History Teacher Quarterly," "Common-Place" and "Knowledge Quest."
In 1991, Mr. Eastman was featured on the Today Show for his work with homeless students and was introduced on the Tonight Show by his high school classmate Jay Leno. In 1992 he hosted a ten part series on Immigration for Massachusetts Educational Television. Mr. Eastman has been featured on PBS's 3 part series Only A Teacher: A History of Teaching in America, and in 2005 he was a contestant on ABC's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. He was named one of the 1982 Outstanding Young Men of America. In 2000, Mr. Eastman earned a second Master's degree, a Master in Liberal Arts from Harvard University. At that graduation he was awarded the Derek Bok Prize for Public Service. In 2001 he was elected a Permanent Resident Fellow at the Massachusetts Historical Society and a Permanent Resident Fellow at the Colonial Society of Massachusetts in 2005.
Mr. Eastman's academic and charitable efforts have been honored with numerous awards, most recently as a 2013 Dignatus Society inductee at Drake University. He is the recipient of the 2004 Preserve America Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year award, the 2005 Prince Saunders Award for contributions to African-American historical research from the National Park Service, the 1991 Drake Alumni Achievement Award, the 1991 American Teacher Award from the Disney Channel, the 1989 Outstanding Teacher Award from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, and the 1989 Christa McAuliffe Fellowship from the Massachusetts Department of Education. Mr. Eastman was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World, as well as two volumes of Who's Who in American Education from 2006 to 2008.
While teaching at Beverly, Mr. Eastman maintains membership with the National Association of Scholars, the Harvard Club of New York City, and the New England Society in New York City. He is currently researching a new book which will be published in about six months, titled, "Strictly Scuttlebutt; From Ivory Halls to Duty Calls," which chronicles his father's World War II memoirs. Mr. Eastman is the co-creator of the history website www.primaryresearch.org. In 2012 he married his wife Syhia M. Eastman. Mr. Eastman also enjoys fishing, poetry, foreign films, and ballet.
