Annette Urso Rickel Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

To advance the study of psychology and to offset the dearth of math and science teachers in America, Dr. Rickel maintains the Annette Urso Rickel Foundation as a provider of scholarships to prospective students. She is a celebrated professor of psychology and psychiatry currently involved with the New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Rickel maintains a psychiatric practice in New York, and specializes in child, marriage, and family therapy.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ralph Francis and Marguerite Urso, Dr. Rickel attended Michigan State University and went on to the University of Michigan, where she earned an MD and a PhD in 1972. She entered practice with the Northeast Guidance Center in Detroit, and started teaching with Wayne State University in 1975. Concurrently, Dr. Rickel conducted psychological research, and was granted funds from the National Institute of Health, the Eloise and Richard Webber Foundation, and the McGregor Fund through the '70s. In the '80s, she was supported with grants from the David M. Whitney Fund and the Katherine Tuck Fund, resulting in a profusion of books on teenage pregnancy, parenting, and women's psychological care.

Dr. Rickel was made a full professor of Wayne State in 1987, and joined Georgetown University in Washington as a clinical professor in 1995. Dr. Rickel accepted a position as program officer with the Rockefeller Foundation from 2000 to 2003, which led to her teaching roles in New York and to the creation of her own foundation in 2003. Prospective scholarship applicants are in good hands with Dr. Rickel, who is the recipient of a 1985 to 1986 Career Development Chair Award and continues to attract research funding.

She is the author of "Chronic Illness in Children and Adolescents" (2007), "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adults" (2006), "Understanding Managed Care" (2000), "High Risk Sexual Behavior" (1998), "Keeping Children From Harm's Way" (1997) and "Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting" (1989). She also co-authored "Preventing Maladjustment" (1987) and "Social and Psychological Problems of Women" (1984).

In addition to her prominent leadership in psychology, Dr. Rickel is a former president of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Society. She has served with the U.S. Senate as an American Psychological Association Congressional Science fellow, and worked with the President's National Health Care Reform Task Force from 1992 to 1993. In 1990, she served on the American Council on Education at Princeton University and Rutgers University. Dr. Rickel maintains a fellowship with the American Psychological Association, the International Women's Forum, the Society for Research in Child Development, the Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, the International Association of Applied Psychologists, and the honor societies Sigma Xi and Psi Chi.
