Since 1994, Dr. Lin has served as a professor of materials science and engineering at the National Taiwan University, and previously, he served the institution as an associate professor. Earlier in his career, he worked as a chemical engineer at the Formosa Plastic Company in Taipei, Taiwan. He was also a project leader of the Farboil Company in Baltimore in 1986 and consultant from 1986 to 1988.

Additionally, Dr. Lin also served at Kunnan Enterprise in Taiwan and at the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Hsinchu, Taiwan. He began his research career in 1991 as a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Dr. Lin received a PhD from the Polytechnic University of New York in 1985. He holds a Master of Science from National Tsing-Hua University and a Bachelor of Science from the National Center University. He is known for his innovative contributions to his industry. He invented a formula to raise the softening point of asphalt coatings from 60 to 100 oC. He also invented a method to determine the degree of cure for epoxy resins and their composites based on florescence wavelength shift, for which he holds the U.S. Patent 5,598,005. He holds a U.S. Patent and ROC Patent for a formula he invented that increases the fracture toughness and decreases the moisture absorption of high temperature epoxy resins and their composites (U.S. Patent 5,672,431; ROC Patent 090879). He also holds multiple patents for inventing a method to exfoliate Montmorillonite and its applications (US Patent 8,513,519 B2; ROC Patent I284654; ROC Patent I349015; ROC Patent I398265).

Dr. Lin has developed an original method that allows for the estimation of the chain conformation of polyelectrolytes in solution. He has been a contributor of book chapters for four books and has coauthored a textbook. He has over 13 patents and has published more than 300 papers, including articles in professional journals, conference papers, and scientific reports. He also served as an editor for the Bulletin of the College of Engineering for the National Taiwan University.

Dr. Lin has been a member of the American Chemical Society for 29 years. Since 1991, he has served as a member of the Taiwan Chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering. He is also a member of the Polymer Society of Taiwan and the Materials Research Society of Taiwan. Dr. Lin is also a veteran, having served in the military as a second lieutenant of the army arsenal from 1977 to 1979. He is married to Jennifer C. Lin. In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, hiking, touring, reading, and Tai-Chi.

Dr. Lin has received multiple awards and recognitions for his outstanding contributions to his field. He was commended with the Technology Research Award by the National Science Council in Taiwan in 2012 and every year from 1987 to 1999. He has also been featured in Who's Who in Asia, and Who's Who in the World.
