ROLLA, MO, September 25, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kamal H. Khayat has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With 28 years of expertise in both cement-based materials and its application in building and transportation infrastructure, Dr. Khayat is a professional in demand in industrializing several countries including the UAE and China, and an expert in the field of rheology of concrete. Dr. Khayat serves as the Vernon and Maralee Jones professor of civil engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, as well as director of the university's Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies. Dr. Khayat is also the Director for the REsearch on Concrete Applications for Sustainable Transportation University Transportation Center, a consortium of five universities across the U.S. funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

As a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Khayat had a stellar start in the field of structural materials and engineering, earning a Master of Engineering in Construction Engineering and Management in 1984. He went on to matriculate for a Master of Science in Structural Engineering, and ultimately earned a PhD in Civil Engineering with a focus on concrete materials in 1989. Dr. Khayat transitioned into a productive year of postdoctoral fellowship with Berkeley, and joined the Universite de Sherbrooke for 21 years. In 1998, he was invited as a guest researcher to the Lafarge Central Research Laboratory in Lyon, France, as well as the Monsanto facility in San Diego, California. He has been a guest professor with Reykjavik University in Iceland, as well as the Universite du Cergy-Pontoise and the Universite d'Artois, both in France, as well as Hunan University in China

Dr. Khayat served at the Universite de Sherbrooke as director of the Center of Excellence on Concrete Infrastructure and Section Head of the Cement and Concrete Research Group. He went on to direct the Integrated Research Laboratory on Materials Valorization and Innovative and Durable Structures from 2004 to 2011.

Dr. Khayat was presented with a five-year major grant from the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSEC) to chair the high performance flowable concrete with adapted rheology consortium at the department of civil engineering at Sherbrooke in 2008. He joined the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2011 to direct the Center for Transportation Infrastructure and Safety, though he still returns as an adjunct instructor to Sherbrooke where he maintains an active research program. He was named Vernon and Maralee Jones professor of Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2011.

Dr. Khayat is a popular mentor for PhD and graduate students, and finds working with bright students the most rewarding part of his profession. He believes his success comes from the unique opportunities he has had, and from the undergraduates he has helped to become world-class researchers.

Dr. Khayat is valued in numerous institutions for his expertise in cement-based materials, including underwater concrete, chemical admixtures, sustainable hydraulic binders, and recycled materials. He has authored over 400 technical papers. Dr. Khayat supports numerous industry organizations, notably the American Concrete Institute and RILEM and is on the editorial boards of numerous journals. He is the recipient of a plethora of awards, most recently presented with a 2017 Foundation Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award for his many years of dedication to civil engineering. Other notable awards accrued by Dr. Khayat include the 2015 Arthur R. Anderson Medal, the 2014 G.H Tattersall Award for developments in sustainable concrete, and the Leonardo da Vinci Medal from the Universite de Sherbrooke in 2004.

Dr. Khayat is the recipient of a 1989 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers REMR Appreciation Certificate for his scientific contributions to the REMR Program. He is also appreciated by his wife and two children, and intends to continue working toward establishing a national center for sustainable and resilient materials, design, and construction of civil engineering structures.
