Mr. Feldman is an American artist and professor of art at Seattle Pacific University, well known for creating large, interactive sculptures as site specific installations. Mr. Feldman has been frequently exhibited across the world, honored as an artist in residence, and has won several prestigious awards. In 1949, Mr. Feldman was born to Marvin Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Feldman in Spokane, Washington. In his youth, Mr. Feldman earned a scholarship for the art school of his choice after his portfolio was one of only twenty that were selected nation-wide. Mr. Feldman chose the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education in 1972. He conducted postgraduate work at Fuller Theological Seminary and Regent College in British Columbia, returning to the U.S. to earn an MFA in Sculpture from the Claremont Graduate University at the University of California in 1977.
The year marked the beginning of a prolific amount of artistic work, spanning a spectacular spread of one-man shows and gallery exhibitions. Notable locations that have hosted Mr. Feldman's work include Freswick Castle in Caithness, Scotland, the Museum of Biblical Art in New York, the Galeria Municipal de Sala do Risco in Lisbon, the Leu Art Gallery at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, the Caceres City Hall in Spain, Regent College in British Columbia, and multiple locations in the Washington area. He was most recently awarded the 2013 Brush Creek Artist Residency and the 2011 Jentel Artist Residency, among his many resident projects. Mr. Feldman has served as an adjunct instructor and guest artist at universities and colleges, and in 2000 he accepted his current post as a professor of art at Seattle Pacific University.
Mr. Feldman's work frequently touches on religious or spiritual themes, such as "Threshold," which combines mathematical harmony with the natural limestone of the Texas environment, and "Tenacious Convergence," which elaborates on the struggles of the Christian martyr Paul of Tarsus. The installations are frequently described as an "experiential metaphor" made up of the language of sensory inputs. Mr. Feldman is fascinated with world religion, and remarks that his work continues to ask, "What is this intangible reality?"
In recognition of his masterpieces, Mr. Feldman has won the 2005 Prescott Sculpture Award given by Christians in the Visual Arts, the 1988 King County Arts Commission Individual Artist Project Award in Seattle, the 1986 National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in Sculpture, and the 1980 David Gaiser Award for sculpture from the Cheney Cowles Museum. His work was recognized in 1987 with design awards for "Viewpoint" and "Seafirst News.," among others. He has also won the 1987 Pace Setter Award, and has worked in the field of graphic design. Mr. Feldman has been awarded grants to continue his work on many occasions, including the 1990 and 1991 Connemara Sculpture Grant from Biola University and faculty research grants from Seattle Pacific University in multiple years from 2001 to 2012.
