It was a career lived through serendipitous opportunity that paralleled many of the women of her generation. Dr. Wertheim was the first woman academic dean at John Carroll.
Dr. Wertheim is a native of Ohio, born in Cleveland in 1931 to Arthur and Anne Harris. She was certified as an elementary school teacher in Ohio in l953, after she married Stanley E. Wertheim in l950. She completed her BA from Flora Stone Mather College in 1953. She then worked in the Social Service Department at University Hospitals in Cleveland. Later she gave birth to Kathryn R. in 1954, Susan B. in 1957 and Carole J. in 1960. Since her teaching certificate had expired, she enrolled at Western Reserve University to renew her certificate. She took the History of Education course and the Professor suggested she join him in his research and later offered her a Graduate Assistantship to continue on in the Doctoral Program in the Foundations of Education. She then earned the PHD in the Foundations of Education from Case Western Reserve University in 1970.
In 1968 Dr. Wertheim became an instructor at John Carroll University in Cleveland. In 1970, she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education. She was appointed the Coordinator of Teacher Education and Chair of the Department of Education in 1976. During the 1980s she was awarded grants from the Jennings Foundation, The Cleveland and The Gund Foundations , as well as the Lilly Foundation. In 1986, She was appointed the first woman Dean of the Graduate School and Director of Faculty Research and Grants where she served until 1999. Then she was appointed Director of Planning and Assessment, served as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2004 and also the Graduate School in 2007.
Concurrently, Dr. Wertheim served as a volunteer in numerous community groups. The University also established the Sally H. Wertheim Scholarship in Leadership and Educational Excellence in 1997. John Carroll University honored her with the Curtis Miles Award for community service in 1977.
Dr. Wertheim has been active in her community. She served as president of the board of the Jewish Family Service Association in Cleveland from 1974 to 1977, and was active in the Jewish Community Federation as the second woman chair of the board, now a lifetime trustee after serving in numerous leadership roles. She has consulted with the Jennings Foundation and the Cleveland Commission on Higher Education in a professional role, and has served on the boards of Facing History, the Mandel Foundation, the Begun Foundation, the Miller Good Foundation, the Gerson Foundation, and the Cleveland Commission on Poverty of the Cleveland Foundation.
In her hometown, Dr. Wertheim has volunteered her time with United Way Services, the Cleveland Community Building Initiative, the Cleveland Education Fund, the Cuyahoga County Mental Health Board, and continues to be a life trustee with Milestones. Dr. Werthiem is a trustee emeriti of the Mount Sinai Health Care Foundation and a former president of Montefiore in Cleveland. She is also the editor of "Remembering" in 2011 by Kent State University Press and an author of professional articles on education in numerous journals.
Dr. Wertheim's gains for American women were honored by Cleveland Magazine, which named her One of the 100 Most Influential Women of 1983 and One of the 29 Most Influential Women of 1997. She is the recipient of the 2009 Charles Eisenman Award from the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, and the 2015 YWCA Women of Achievement Award. For academic excellence and for becoming an example for women in academia, Dr. Wertheim was welcomed into numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women. She enjoys flower arranging, travel, and antiques.
